Food producers

Bread bakers, pastry makers, manufacturers of homemade cheese, meat products, sausages and other treats. These facilities offer high-quality food that is produced in small volumes and is, therefore, not sold at supermarkets.

  • The offer is very diverse, ranging from large farms and companies to small and individual ones.
  • Tours of a manufacturing facility or farm usually end with product tastings and purchases.
  • Farms often produce raw materials such as milk, as well as secondary products such as soured milk, buttermilk, cheese and yogurt.
  • Many farms operate in various sectors – dairy products, vegetables, berries, fruit or animal products. The sectors supplement one another, and so the farms are more interesting to visitors, because the offer of tastings and purchases is very diverse, indeed.

Juri Farm

In the 1930s, the grandfather of the current owner of Juri farm, Juris Lubāns, built a house in Latgale, in what is now Preiļi Municipality, and began developing the farm. In the 1990s, the current owners, Juris and Lidija, returned to Juri and took over the farm. Traditional farming alone was not enough to make a living, so the couple learned the art of cheesemaking. Their cheese quickly became popular among family and neighbours, and over time they built up a loyal customer base.

Cheeses

  • Juru cheese – a white fresh cheese made from milk
  • Jurjāņu cheese – a traditional milk cheese with caraway seeds
  • Martinella – a type of mozzarella
  • Rušonas cheese – a fresh milk cheese
  • Pakša cheese – a traditional Latgalian dried curd cheese

How the Cheese Is Made
The cheese is made from organic milk produced by the farm’s herd of five cows. The recipes have been passed down by experienced cheesemakers, adapted from cookbooks dating back to the 1930s, and developed further by the farm’s owners.

For Visitors
The owners share stories about traditional cheesemaking and offer tea or coffee accompanied by cheese served on dishes made by Latgalian potters. Visitors can taste Jāņi cheese with caraway seeds or herbs, mild mozzarella and fresh ricotta, as well as other products made on the farm, including milk, soured milk and buttermilk.
Guests can watch the cheesemaking process and take part themselves. The farm is also home to a variety of domestic animals, which visitors can see. Camping pitches are available for overnight stays.

Where to Buy the Cheese
Juru cheeses can be purchased directly from the farm.

Watermill of the Krape manor

The watermill of the Krape Estate is found on the Lobe River in the Ogre Administrative District.  Owners offer tours of the mill so that you can learn how the old mill operates.  You can stroll along the banks of the river or learn about plants in the meadow.  There are places for tenting, but the main operation here is the production of elixirs from meadow plants, production of soy wax candles, production of etheric oils and hydrolats, a well as growing trout and African catfish that can be viewed during the season.  A new thing is SPA services with floating, a halotherapy salt beach and an aromatherapy steam system.

Floating is a unique way to boost your health.  You’ll be dipped into a warm magnesium salt solution, which will allow your body to relax completely in physical, emotional and intellectual terms.  The solution (MgSO4) is very concentrated, and it has a temperature of +37C, which is body temperature.  That’s what makes the procedure so relaxing.  Your body will not sink because of the concentration of salt, and you will float above it like bobber.  You will relax all of your tendons and possibly compressed nerves.  Your limbs will “oil up.”  Your body will receive a very necessary dose of magnesium through your skin.

You can also take part in baking KrapesKrepes crepes – home baked crepes made of milk from one neighbouring homestead and eggs from another neighbouring homestead.  You can also prepare a meal on a Himalayan salt board

Cheeses
A wide range of cheeses is available, including farmhouse cheese with various flavourings and Spanish-style cheese. The farm’s particular speciality is its smoked garlic cheese, a firm favourite among customers.

How the Cheese Is Made

Kundzin' Siers Cheese Dairy

Kundziņ' siers cheese dairy began as a young family’s dream of having their own cheese dairy, brought to life in 2018 in Bērzciems. What started with making cheese for local residents, family and friends gradually grew into a loyal customer base. The name Kundziņ' siers comes from the family name, Kundziņš.

Cheeses

  • Smoked cheeses – plain or with garlic, sun-dried tomatoes or caraway.
  • Fresh cheeses – plain or with garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, caraway, sweet clover seeds or toasted seeds.

How the Cheese Is Made
The day begins at dawn with fresh, just-milked cow’s milk, supplied by a farm in Vandzene. The cheeses are made exclusively from unpasteurised cow’s milk, with carefully selected ingredients added to each variety to create a rich and well-balanced flavour. Every cheese is handmade, with each wheel carefully shaped by hand.

For Visitors
A visit to the Kundziņ' siers cheese dairy offers an opportunity to discover the story behind the business, learn how the dairy began, taste the cheeses and see how they are made.

Visitors are welcome individually, as families or in groups. The dairy also welcomes corporate groups, celebration parties and travellers passing through Bērzciems. Visits are available on weekdays, weekends and public holidays by prior arrangement.

During the tasting, guests can sample fresh, smoked and fried cheeses, served with grapes, crispbreads, nuts and dips. Water and juice are included.

For a little extra fun, visitors can also take part in the “Cow Milking” challenge — a light-hearted milking competition.

The goats graze on diverse pastures, and hay rich in a wide variety of plant species is harvested for them. This gives the dairy products a more distinctive and intense flavour profile, as well as higher levels of essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

For Visitors
Visitors can learn about the farm and the lives of the goats, taste goat’s milk products and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the River Rūja and the hillfort.

Where to Buy
The cheeses are available directly from the farm, at the Valmiera REKO farmers’ market and the Slow Food Straupe market, as well as at town festival markets in Valmiera, Rūjiena and Mazsalaca.

Lazdonas piensaimnieks (Lazdona Dairy)

The tradition of dairy processing in Lazdona dates back more than 100 years. Today, the company produces milk, cheese, sour cream, curd cheese, quark products, yoghurts, desserts and other dairy products. Lazdonas piensaimnieks is one of the few producers of Jāņu siers, a traditional Latvian cheese recognised by the European Union as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) product. Several of the company’s products also carry Zaļā karotīte (Green Spoon), Latvia’s national quality mark for food products.

Cheeses

  • Jāņu siers (Jāņu cheese) – a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed product, produced seasonally at AS Lazdonas piensaimnieks to celebrate the cheese’s important place in Latvian summer solstice traditions. Demand for this cheese is high every year, reflecting its consistent quality, authentic flavour and consumers’ enduring trust in the Lazdona brand.
  • Baltais siers – white curd cheese, mild-flavoured, with the characteristic crumbly texture of curd. A versatile cheese that is delicious on its own as a snack, or added to salads, where it complements other flavours while bringing out their subtle nuances. High in protein.
  • Baltais siers ar zaļumiem - white curd cheese with herbs. Thanks to its blend of herbs, this is the most colourful of Lazdona’s curd cheeses. A delicious and nutritious snack.
  • Baltais siers ar ķimenēm - white curd cheese with caraway, is a curd cheese with a distinctive flavour that may transport you, for a moment, to a warm summer solstice evening beside a Midsummer bonfire. The addition of caraway complements the cheese beautifully, creating a rich, full flavour deeply rooted in Latvian culinary tradition.
  • Ķimeņu siers - caraway cheese, a lighter alternative to the traditional Jāņu cheese, with a fat content of 10%. A traditional flavour that never disappoints.

How the Cheese is Made
The products are made from high-quality ingredients, including milk sourced from more than 100 local family farms and three agricultural co-operatives. The company continuously improves its production processes to preserve the nutritional value of its products while enhancing their flavour and quality.

Visitor experience
From May to October, visitors can discover how dairy products are made by touring the production facilities and tasting a selection of the company’s products.

Where to Buy
Lazdona cheeses are available in shops throughout Latvia, including Rimi, Maxima, Beta, Aibe, Mego and other retailers.
When booking a tour, visitors can also purchase products directly from the production facility. If you would like to buy products on site without booking a tour, the minimum purchase is €100.

Rehtsprehera Siers

Rehtšprehera cheese is made in Lēdurga Parish, Sigulda Municipality, at the Mazlauri family farm. The farm began making cheese in 2015, seeking a new challenge and an opportunity to create products with added value. The cheeses are made using Italian recipes and matured for 2–12 months using traditional methods – in a dedicated room, on spruce-wood shelves, under carefully controlled humidity and temperature.

Cheeses

  • Hard cheeses (matured for 6–12 months): Grand Marine and Gouda matured for 8 months.
  • Semi-hard cheeses (matured for 2–4 months): Gouda (available with a linseed oil coating or a special cheese coating), Tallegio (available with a balsamic vinegar coating or a special cheese coating), Toskāna and Sorento.
  • Some cheeses are also available with additions such as black cumin seeds, pepper, tomatoes and basil, or tomatoes, garlic and oregano. Some varieties have an edible rind.
  • Around the summer solstice, the farm also produces a cheese similar to traditional Jāņu cheese – a matured cheese flavoured with caraway seeds.

How the Cheese is Made
The cheese is made from milk produced by the farm’s own cows. The herd comprises around 90 milking Holstein Friesian cows. Rehtšprehera cheese is made from freshly drawn, unpasteurised cow’s milk, which is sent for processing immediately after milking. This helps preserve the milk’s natural flavour and character.

For visitors
Visitors to the farm can hear and see the authentic story of how milk and cheese are produced – from caring for the dairy herd and growing nutritious, balanced feed to ensuring high standards of animal welfare and producing extra-class milk. They can also learn about the practical realities of living and working in the countryside. The visit concludes with an introduction to the cheesemaking process and a cheese tasting.

Where to Buy

  • Online at www.rsiers.lv.
  • Available in shops in Riga, Cēsis and Sigulda.
  • On Saturdays, the cheeses are available at Skulte Market, the Slow Food Straupe farmers’ market and various markets throughout Latvia.

Bakery TERVETES MAIZE

A small bakery that Jānis Kurpnieks, a baker with more than 20 years of experience, has set up in his father's home. More than 12 types of bread from cereals grown in Latvia. The greatest pride of the bakery is its wholemeal rye bread and sweet and sour bread, neither of which contains wheat flour. Rye bread is baked in large loaves weighing 8-9 kg and reaching up to half a metre in length. With such a loaf, the flavour “bouquet” is stronger and the shelf life – longer. Only natural ingredients and home-made sourdough, taken from the dough scraper (the dough of the previous baking), are used here for baking bread. The dough is fermented in oak tubs and the bread is baked in a proper bread oven, which is fired with softwood.

In 2013, Jānis Lapsa began making cheese in his home kitchen in Ogre as a small-scale home producer. Today, the entire cheese-making process remains 100% handmade, from preparing the cheese mixture to shaping and packaging the finished products.

Cheeses

  • Cow's milk cheese with reduced salt content - available in 27 different flavours. The cheeses carry the “Green Spoon” quality mark, recognising products that meet established Latvian quality and sustainability criteria.
  • Lactose-free cow's milk cheese with reduced salt content – Lapsu Mājas began producing it in 2021, pioneering lactose-free farmhouse cheese in Latvia.
  • Jāņu cheese - a traditional Latvian cheese associated with the summer solstice celebrations, is made in two varieties – with butter or with sweet cream.

How the Cheese Is Made
The milk used in production is sourced from local dairy suppliers. The milk for the reduced-salt cheeses and Jāņi cheese is supplied by the dairy processing company “Straupe”, while the milk used for the lactose-free cheeses is sourced from AS “Jaunpils pienotava”. The eggs used in production are supplied by “Rasas”, a farm in Ropaži Municipality.

For Visitors

  • A tour of the production, followed by a tasting of 10 different varieties. The selection may include sweet cheese, the Legendary Pine Cone, lactose-free cheese, Jāņu cheese and grilled cheese. The tasting and presentation can also be arranged at a customer’s chosen location.
  • Jāņu cheese-making workshop. Learn about the traditional process and techniques used to make Jāņi cheese and take part in making it yourself. Participants can taste freshly made, warm Jāņu cheese and sample warm whey, traditionally known as the “elixir of youth”. The workshop can also be arranged at a customer’s chosen location.

Silmaci

Siers tiek gatavots no svaiga piena, rūpīgi kontrolējot katru soli – no slaukšanas līdz nogatavināšanai.

Gredzenmuiza Farm

Gredzenmuiža goat farm is located in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, near Lake Burtnieks. The farm keeps goats and makes fresh goat’s cheese from milk produced by its own herd. The farmers follow the rhythms of nature and are committed to an environmentally friendly way of life. Alongside the cheese, seasonal produce includes blackcurrant preserves, herbal teas and woollen goods.

Cheeses
The farm makes a fresh white goat’s cheese with no added ingredients, as well as a creamy goat’s milk caramel spread.

How the Cheese Is Made

The cheese is made slowly and patiently throughout the year, using milk from the farm’s own goats. The farm follows a closed-cycle approach: the family grows, tends and harvests its own crops, eating some themselves and feeding the rest to the goats. Each autumn, manure from the goat barn is returned to the fields, enriching the soil and helping the gardens flourish again the following year.

For Visitors
As goat’s milk is seasonal, the farm offers three different experiences throughout the year:

  • During the milking season: meet the goats, hear stories about the animals and their milk, and taste a selection of goat’s milk products. There is even the opportunity to try a playful goat massage — in reverse.
  • Cheese-making masterclass: make your own personalised cheese and, once the whey has been pressed out, have it sent to you via a refrigerated parcel locker.
  • Outside the milking season: join a walk with the goats, hear stories about the animals and farm life, and brew herbal tea together over an open fire. The visitor drinks the tea; the goats or billy goats get the tea leaves.

Where to Buy
The cheeses are available directly from the farm, at Slow Food Straupe farmers’ markets and at major fairs across Vidzeme.
They can also be ordered online via online market https://tirgus.novadagarsa.lv.

Cheese and pasta factory SIERA RAZOTNE

The Ceriņi family business has been the only producer of Zaļais siers (Green Cheese) in Latvia for more than 19 years. The historic recipe comes from notes kept by the owner’s mother, Marija. One of the cheese’s defining ingredients, fenugreek, is grown in the family garden each summer. It is this distinctive herb that gives the cheese its characteristic flavour, aroma and deep green colour. The dairy also produces around 20 varieties of pasta.

Cheeses
Alongside Zaļais siers, the dairy makes a range of other grated cheeses, including cheese with porcini mushrooms, Ķiplociņš with garlic, and cheese with herbs. There is also Knapsieriņš, a piquant snack made from low-fat curd cheese and herbs.

How the Cheese Is Made
All of the grated cheeses are made from skimmed cow’s milk, making them a good source of protein while keeping their fat content low.

The dairy’s signature product is Raunas Green Cheese, made with fenugreek grown in the family garden. Fenugreek is an annual plant with five-lobed leaves and small blue flowers. The young, tender shoots are harvested and dried in a wood-fired drying room. Once dried, the fenugreek is ground, sieved and blended into a protein-rich cheese mass. This is spread in a thin layer in specially made wooden boxes and left to dry. It is the addition of sweet clover that gives the cheese its distinctive green colour, aroma and flavour.

These cheeses have a rich, concentrated flavour and are wonderfully versatile in the kitchen. Making grated cheese is a lengthy and labour-intensive process: more than two months pass from milking the cows to the finished product reaching the shelves.

For Visitors
Visitors can discover the story of the dairy and taste four varieties of grated cheese: Raunas Green Cheese, porcini mushroom cheese, herb cheese and Ķiplociņš, as well as wholesome ghee. To bring traditional flavours to life, guests can also sample Knapsieriņš in different degrees of spiciness — a tasty, protein-rich curd cheese snack that pairs particularly well with beer and other drinks.

The approximately one-hour tour also reveals how the dairy produces around 20 varieties of pasta using free-range eggs, including pasta with porcini mushrooms, hemp, garlic, fenugreek, herbs, sun-dried tomatoes and jalapeño peppers, as well as colourful varieties and many more.

Where to Buy
The cheeses are available from the dairy’s self-service shop at Parka iela 4a, Rauna, Smiltenes Municipality.
They are also sold throughout Latvia at Rimi, Top, Stockmann and PKS Straupe.

Nicas Siers

The Nīca cheese dairy is based at the Birzmaļi farm, one of the largest milk producers in the Lower Kurzeme region. The idea of producing artisan cheese was first conceived in 2017 and became a reality with support from the LEADER programme, which helped establish the dairy. Every wheel of cheese is handmade by skilled cheesemakers, with great care and attention to quality.

Cheeses

  • Fresh cheese – a mozzarella-style fresh cheese with a range of additions, including caraway seeds, basil and paprika, as well as other carefully selected flavour combinations.
  • Semi-hard cheese – made using a Dutch cheesemaking method, giving it a mild, slightly sweet flavour and an elastic texture. The cheese is matured for between three and twelve months.
  • Hard cheese – made to a recipe rooted in Italian cheesemaking traditions. It has a pronounced flavour and character and is matured for either six or twelve months, developing a rich and nuanced flavour profile.

How the Cheese Is Made
The cheese is made from unpasteurised cow’s milk from the morning milking, which is processed while still warm. This approach helps preserve the milk’s natural flavour and character, resulting in cheese that is distinctive, nuanced and full of life. The cheese is made by cheesemaker Dace Vecbaštika, who combines traditional methods with meticulous handcraft.

For Visitors
The dairy is not normally open to visitors, but cheese tastings can be arranged in advance. Nīca cheese can also be sampled at Dzintariņš café in Bernāti, as well as at Parka Paviljons and Spīķeris 53 restaurants in Liepāja.

Where to Buy
Nīca cheeses are available from selected outlets, including LATS shops in Nīca, the cheese stall at Liepāja’s Pētertirgus, the Martas kiosks home-producer shop in Grobiņa, and home-producer markets in Rožu laukums, Liepāja. Majestātiskā trīsstāvu pamatīgu laukakmeņu mūra ēka, kas atrodas pašā Balvi-Viļaka ceļa malā, ir sākusi dzīvot jaunu dzīvi, kur ikvienam ir iespēja nobaudīt vietējo Latgales produktu garšu dažādā izpildījumā.

Dzirnavu saimniece  - viena no īstajām latvju saimniecēm Vija Kuļša uzņem tūristu grupas, kurām piedāvā nobaudīt vietējo Latgales produktu garšu dažādā izpildījumā.

Kazas tiek turētas vidē, kur tās var brīvi ganīties, pašām izvēloties augstvērtīgāko zāli no saimniecības pļavām.

Celmi Farm

Celmi Farm was established in 1992, when its owners also began dairy farming and producing farmhouse cheese. The farmhouse cheeses are always fresh, as they are made every day using only milk from the farm’s own cows.

Cheeses
Celmi Farm offers a wide variety of farmhouse cheeses made from fresh farm milk – fresh, salted, spicy, smoked and sweet cheeses, as well as traditional caraway cheese. They are distinguished by their high nutritional value, rich flavour and versatility, making them suitable for both everyday meals and festive occasions.

How the Cheese Is Made
The farm makes its cheese from milk produced by its own herd of 54 black-and-white and Latvian Brown cows. The cows are carefully fed and graze in the meadows during the summer, ensuring high-quality milk with a high protein content. The cheese is made every day by cheesemaker Inga Celma and reaches the market as a fresh product the following day.

For visitors
Visitors can take part in tours of the farm, where they can see how the cheese is made and taste a variety of farmhouse cheeses. Visits are available by prior booking.

Where to Buy
The cheeses are available at the farm, at Riga Central Market, in specialist shops and selected supermarkets. The products are also available from partner outlets and by contacting the farm directly.
