From 2 to 5 February, CiderCon 2026 took place in Rhode Island, USA – the largest event in the cider industry, bringing together professionals from around the world. This year, Baltic Cider was represented by four cider producers: Abuls, Mr. Plūme, Lauskis, and Pienjāņi. Baltic cider was presented through two activities:

Cider Share (3 February), where Baltic ciders were presented alongside ciders from around the world;
Baltic Cider Tasting Session (5 February), a dedicated event for Baltic cider – a professional tasting session and presentation introducing the Baltic Cider initiative, including the first results of the terroir studies, and showcasing three Latvian cider producers. The session also included a discussion with cider producers.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to learn and exchange experience, taste a wide range of ciders, and establish new contacts.

Within the BASCIL project, we have developed new marketing materials for the Latvian Cider Route – coaster-style information cards designed to introduce authentic apple cider producers in Latvia and encourage travel to cideries.

These materials invite visitors to enjoy real Latvian apple cider and serve as inspiration to discover cider producers across the country. They encourage travellers to visit cideries on site and experience cider where it is made.

The Latvian Cider Route brings together cideries that produce cider from freshly pressed local apples, offering tastings, tours and opportunities to learn about the stories behind cider making.

From 19 October to 1 November, the first Baltic Cider trade mission took place in Australia, promoting authentic apple cider from Latvia, Estonia and Finland. As part of the mission, cider makers from the three countries won medals at Australia’s largest cider competition – the Australian Cider Awards.

The export mission to Australia was carried out by a united Baltic Cider team as part of the Interreg Central Baltic project “Exports of the Baltic and Finnish Craft Ciders to Australia”, bringing together the Latvian Country Tourism Association “Lauku ceļotājs”, the Estonian Rural Tourism Organisation, and cider makers from all three countries – Latvia, Estonia and Finland

On September 9 in Pärnu, Estonia, the fourth partner meeting of the “Baltic Cider” project took place. The event brought together project partners and cider producers from Latvia and Estonia to discuss project activities, including laboratory analysis and results, pilot and experimental cider production, the development of a terroir map, as well as marketing.

Since the meeting was hosted at the Jaanihanso Cidery, participants also had the opportunity to learn about the history and development of the estate, apple growing, and cider production. The hosts guided the guests on a tour around the cidery, showcasing the everyday processes that result in delicious cider. Experiences like these help all project participants to gain new insights and ideas, strengthening the work towards building recognition and competitiveness for Baltic cider.

On 28 August 2025, the online webinar “Introduction to the Australian Market” took place within the framework of the BALT-FIN-CIDER project. This was the first in a series of meetings dedicated to exploring cider export opportunities to Australia.

The BASCIL project partners, in cooperation with culinary tourism experts Hubert Gonera and Niclas Fjellström, have updated the BASCIL Manual – Practical Solutions for Designing Culinary Tourism Services. The manual is designed to support food producers and farmers in diversifying their business activities by developing sustainable culinary tourism experiences based on high-quality local products.

The manual guides producers step by step in creating attractive tourism services using tools and strategies based on the Business Model Canvas. It also includes 12 practical examples from BASCIL pilot regions and summarises key findings, lessons learned and recommendations based on the experience of 88 companies across 12 regions, offering a clear roadmap from product-based business models towards the experience economy.

On June 11, Gabe Cook, a ciderologist from the United Kingdom, led a training session "Qualitative experience on the impact of terroir on cider, how to use it in story telling for visitors" - how to welcome the visitors, making the stories and info for the visitors about the cider - explaining about the reason where the apples grow and why Baltic cider is so special in the taste and variety.

On February 18-19th, the fifth meeting of the "Forest and Coastal Hiking Trails' accessibility improvement for different social groups" project partners took place in Kadrina Manor guesthouse, village of Kadrina, Tartu County, Peipsimaa, Estonia. On the first day, the project partners shared their activities since the previous meeting in September, as well as the tasks to be carried out in the future, the responsibilities and involvement of each project partner were discussed. On the second day, February 19, we went to inspect potential places on the "Forest Trail" route along Lake Peipus that would be suitable for placing web cameras. During the day, we checked the "Forest Trail" marking in nature, as well as found new tourism service providers to add to the baltictrails.eu website.

From January 28th to 31st, a FAM tour (familiarization trip) was held, attended by seven media representatives and tour operators from the United Kingdom. The purpose of the visit was to showcase nature tourism opportunities in Latvia and Estonia, despite challenging weather conditions. During the visit, participants learned not only about nature and active tourism possibilities but also about Latvian and Estonian culture, history, and had the chance to explore Riga. For most of the participants, it was their first time in Latvia, and their expectations varied prior to the trip. Some imagined snowy white landscapes, while others expected an interesting history, Eastern European cuisine, and traditions.

The conference "Integrating Military Heritage into Tourism and Education," held on 10 January 2025 in Riga, brought together historians, educators, and military heritage tourism professionals from the Baltic countries and across Europe. The event fostered a spirit of collaboration among these sectors on international scale, aiming to make history education more engaging and accessible for younger audiences, especially school-aged children, by incorporating military heritage site visits and programmes into school curricula. By sharing experiences and building connections, participants laid the groundwork for fresh, creative approaches to teaching history, with a focus on broadening perspectives beyond national borders. We hope that the conference has inspired new standards in history education, supported by the integration of military heritage tourism and international approach.

This event was organized by Baltic Country Holidays and supported by the European Union Interreg VI-A Estonia–Latvia Programme. It served as a platform to exchange ideas and strengthen international cooperation in military heritage tourism.

The Christmas Battles of the First World War are etched in Latvian history as a tragic yet heroic tale. According to the old style, or Julian calendar, the attack on the German Imperial Army began on 23rd December 1916, on the eve of Christmas. These battles, in which all Latvian rifleman regiments participated for the first time, became known as the "Christmas Battles". The Christmas Battles and the subsequent January Battles were the most tragic yet also one of the most heroic chapters in the history of the Latvian riflemen. The Latvian riflemen achieved what no Russian unit had managed on the Riga front – breaking through the German defences and capturing an area of approximately 30 square kilometres. During the Christmas Battles, both Russian and Latvian forces suffered heavy losses, with the Latvian losses measured in the thousands. These significant casualties severely undermined the loyalty of the Latvians to the Russian Empire's authorities and marked a turning point in both the history of the riflemen and Latvia. The riflemen's fight is depicted in Aleksandrs Grīns' novel and the 2019 film adaptation, Blizzard of Souls ("Dvēseļu putenis").

On September 4th, we hosted the NAT-TOUR-EXPO Partner’s Meeting in Riga, Latvia. The event brought together all project partners and included virtual participation from Nordic nature tourism experts in the UK. During the meeting, partners shared their recent achievements and outlined their plans for the future.

Currently, the platform features nearly 200 diverse nature tourism products offered by SMEs from Latvia and Estonia. These businesses are actively engaging in specialized training sessions on topics such as photography, sauna rituals, and more to enhance their sales and market presence. In the meeting, partners discussed the latest news in tourism and travel trends and patterns based on the available data.

Reģionā, kas ir bagāts ar dabas vērtībām, kultūrvēsturisko mantojumu un sirsnīgiem un apņēmīgiem cilvēkiem. Paralēli biedrības dibināšanai tika uzsākta arī piemērotu telpu meklēšana reģionā. Tika apskatītas dažādas ēkas, taču īstā izrādījās 2003. gadā slēgtā Kaldabruņas skola. Biedrības biedru vidū ir pedagogi, vides aizsardzības, finansu un projektu menedžmenta speciālisti, mākslinieki, lauksaimnieki, tūrisma gidi, pensionāri – gan no reģiona iedzīvotāju vidus, gan citām vietām Latvijā.

Suiti ir viena no krāšņākajām un savdabīgākajām kultūras tradīcijām bagātākajām kopienām ne tikai Kurzemē, bet arī visā Latvijā. Kā apliecinājums tam ir 2009. gada 1. oktobrī Suitu kultūrtelpas iekļaušana UNESCO Pasaules Nemateriālās kultūras mantojuma sarakstā, kam nepieciešama neatliekama glābšana. Suitu kultūrtelpa ir iekļauta arī Latvijas Kultūras kanonu tautas tradīciju sarakstā. Izpausmes, kas raksturo suitu nemateriālās kultūras mantojumu, ir tradicionālie svētki, tautas parašas, mutvārdu tradīcija, tradicionālās dziedāšanas un muzicēšanas prasmes, tradicionālā tautas tērpa darināšana un ēdiena gatavošanas tradīcijas.
