Saloons, cafes and other places in small towns and the countryside which offer tasty dishes made of local products and on the basis of traditional Latvian recipes – ones which differ from region to region.

  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

Igate castle Mill cafe

The saloon is at the edge of the Murjāņi-Limbaži road (P9) and alongside the Igate Castle. It is built on the foundations of a former windmill, and the wheel of the mill has been preserved. The old watermill is still hard at work and is used to mill grain for traditional porridge and buns. The saloon works with local farmers.

Latvian cuisine: Mushroom soup, barley porridge with meat, barley buns, grit sausage with lingonberry sauce, crepes with jam, potato pancakes, fried plaice or pike, stacked rye bread.

Special foods: Sautéed rabbit, stuffed filet of turkey.

Latvia

Araisi windmill

The windmill is on a hill and offers a lovely view. This is one of the few Dutch-type windmills (built in 1852) to still be in operational order, and guests can help to grind grain. On the last Sunday of every July, the windmill organises a celebration in honour of St Jacob and of bread baked from freshly harvested rye.

The “Kandava” café

The "Kandava" café is located in the centre of town alongside Market Square and the Kandava Hotel.

Latvian cuisine: Herring with potatoes and cottage cheese, oatmeal, homemade steak haché, stuffed crepes, cottage cheese buns with jam.

The café is in the centre of Ludza with a lovely view of local churches and a castle hill.  Lettigalian foods made of various ingredients are offered.
Latvian cuisine: Grey peas with bacon, various pork dishes.

The “Ieviņa” café and bakery is in the centre of town and near Market Square. It sells cookies, pastries, tortes, carrot buns, pierogi, etc.

The “Kungu rija” restaurant

The restaurant is on the edge of the Turaida-Ragana road. The granary was built in 2004 in line with historical traditions. It resembles the Turaida Estate granary that was built by Baron Holstein.

Latvian cuisine: Smoked catfish, leg of lamb, roast veal, venison or pork, stuffed duck or goose.

A cosy café in the centre of Liepāja. Offers coffee, delicious cakes and great food. Every morning at around 5 a.m., the croissant master starts to work in order to have fresh croissants ready to serve for 9 a.m.

The pub is located in a wooden log building and situated in the suburbs of Sigulda, allowing one to feel the Latvian spirit in the interior and enjoy Latvian-style dishes. The pub has maintained the traditions and quality of Latvian cuisine.

Latvian cuisine: Sauerkraut soup, filet of pike-perch, pike cakes, pork tongue, pork ribs, homemade steak haché, potato pancakes, stacked rye bread, rye bread baked in honey, baked ap.ple, homemade ice cream.
