  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

The castle diner is situated next to Koknese castle ruins. Either before or after boating, Nordic walking, visiting the castle ruins, enjoy tasty coffee, baked buns, snacks, french fries, grilled sausages, ice-cream or buy a soft drink to go with your sandwiches and to drink while sitting in the courtyard of the ancient castle and watching an amazing view of Perse and Daugava crossing. Upon special request we can also cook our very tasty Firesoup.

The Aglona Bread Museum

At this museum, you will learn all about the baking of bread from grain to loaf, and you can make your own loaves, too. You can taste bread and herbal teas. There are theatrical performances related to christenings, weddings, birthdays, etc. Local foods such as dumplings and soups made of dried mushrooms or lake fish are served. The museum sells freshly baked bread, as well as the work of local craftspeople. The hostess is a master baker and a member of the Chamber of Crafts.

Latvian cuisine: Lake fish soup, cottage cheese dumplings and other traditional Lettigalian dishes.

The café is in the centre of Ludza, offering a large menu and complex lunches.  A speciality of the house is freshwater fish from lakes in Latgale.

Latvian cuisine: Pike, tench, carp and pike-perch dishes, with blood sausage, other sausages and pig’s snout prepared on order for the Winter Solstice.

The “Liepkalni” café

The café is on the banks of the Daugava River between Stukmaņi and Pļaviņas, offering a bakery, shop and café. There are dozens of types of bread, biscuits, tortes, cakes and other baked goods.

Latvian cuisine: Dumpling or sorrel soup, farmer’s breakfast, eggs sunny side up, pork ribs, grey peas, potato pancakes with salmon, crepes, blackberry crème.

Lamprey farm KRUPIS

Lamprey catching and processing traditions started long ago in Carnikava, in the place where the River Gauja enters the sea. On the tour you can find out about lamprey and their preparation methods, as well as enjoy them grilled, jellied or in the form of lamprey sushi.

The “Katrinkrogs” saloon

The saloon is on the shore of Lake Alūksne and the Jaunsētas country tourism and leisure centre.  The log saloon’s interior is based on the style of the 17th century, when a girl was born in the area who was raised by her foster father Ernst Glick and would later become Empress Catharine the Great, Wife of Peter the Great of Russia.
Latvian cuisine:  Pike or pike-perch soup with fish from Lake Alūksne, pork tongue, fried egg in a coat of flour, stacked rye bread with loganberry jam and whipped cream.
Special foods:  Lunch a la Maliena – stock with profiteroles.

The “Plostkrogs” saloon

This saloon is in a lovely place – the ancient Abava River valley between Kandava and Sabile. It is housed in an historical building with among the largest chimneys in the Baltic States. A camp for water tourists is alongside the saloon.

Latvian cuisine: Chilled beet soup, dumpling soup, sorrel soup, sauerkraut soup, chicken livers, homemade steak haché, dried pork ribs, roast pork, grilled pork, potato pancakes with cream, crepes, herbal teas.

Special foods: Cabbage stuffed with smoked meat, cottage cheese and onions.
