Saloons, cafes and other places in small towns and the countryside which offer tasty dishes made of local products and on the basis of traditional Latvian recipes – ones which differ from region to region.

  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

The bistro is in the centre of Jelgava and offers fresh canapés, cakes, pierogi, cookies and other baked goods. It works with local producers of ingredients.

Latvian cuisine: Bacon pierogi, potato pancakes, wheat-potato porridge with bacon sauce, whipped fool with milk. Grey peas with bacon during the season of the Winter Solstice.

Special foods: The “Duke’s Sail” – oven-roasted pork with caramelised sauerkraut, roast vegetables, lingonberry sauce and horseradish.

Hotel and restaurant MALPILS MANOR

The restaurant is located in the Mālpils manor building that was renovated in 2008 and is a classicism architectural monument of the 19th century. The restaurant's menu changes and is updated according to the season. Combination of exquisite flavour nuances with an elegant manor interior.

Araisi windmill

The windmill is on a hill and offers a lovely view. This is one of the few Dutch-type windmills (built in 1852) to still be in operational order, and guests can help to grind grain. On the last Sunday of every July, the windmill organises a celebration in honour of St Jacob and of bread baked from freshly harvested rye.

The bakery is on the main pedestrian thoroughfare in town. It uses old recipes to bake wedding cakes and other baked goods. The bakery works with local producers of ingredients.

Guest house KONU DZIRNAVAS

The watermill processes wool with equipment that is 100 years old and is used to produce handmade blankets and pillows that are stuffed with sheep wool, as well as souvenirs that can be commissioned and purchased.  The watermill offers tours and fresh-baked bread.  A wool pulling and wrapping machine that dates back to the 19th century and was manufactured at the Šūberts Rudītis & Co company in the 19th century is still used, as are a unique weaving apparatus from Germany and a grain mill.

 

Latvian cuisine: Marinated herring with vegetables, porridge, mashed potatoes a la Vidzeme (with fried onions), pancakes with jam made of Latvian berries and honey, homemade bread.

Café and bread museum KUKABURRA

The “Kukaburra” café is located on the 115th km of the Riga-Veclaicene highway (A2). It is possible to see the Bread museum. Guests can take part in baking rye bread every weekend. The café has a Latvian interior and serves products from local farmers and home-based producers of ingredients.

Latvian cuisine: Chicken liver salad, lamb soup, dumpling soup, cold soup, baked catfish, sautéed pork, potato pancakes, pancakes with jam cottage cheese buns, stacked rye bread.

The “Ragalu krogs” saloon

The saloon is on the edge of the Rīga-Daugavpils road (A6), works with local fishermen, and grows herbs and greens in its own garden.
