Saloons, cafes and other places in small towns and the countryside which offer tasty dishes made of local products and on the basis of traditional Latvian recipes – ones which differ from region to region.

  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

Café SONATE

The café is located 200 m south of the Stāmeriena Castle in Vecstāmeriena.  It is in one of the historical buildings of the local baronial estate and has an antique interior.  It is possible to try out dishes typical for Gulbene district.

The “Bemberi” bakery and café

The bakery and cafe in Saulkrasti – not far from Saulkrasti railway station. The baker offers pierogi, cakes and other baked goods, as well as dishes for all meals. A second café can be found at Raiņa Street 7 in Saulkrasti.

Latvian cuisine: Cold soup, potato salad, sauerkraut, homemade steak haché, grey peas and bacon.

Special foods: Pizzas cooked in a wood-fired oven.

The “Mezinieku majas” guesthouse

The guesthouse breeds cattle, grows fruits and vegetables, produces dairy and meat products, boils cheese on a campfire, teaches people how to make cheese, bakes bread according to ancient recipes, and offers Lettigalian weddings.
Latvian cuisine: Rye bread, 14 kinds of cheese, farmer’s soup, locally brewed beer with demonstrations of how that is done.
Special foods: Dumplings with mushroom sauce.

Viitna Tavern

Viitna Tavern is one of the few 19th C tavern and post station buildings preserved in Estonia to date. Originally landlords and other rich folk had their rooms and a horse stable in the building’s left wing; today it is a canteen and Estonian handicraft shop. The right wing was for peasant folk chambers and a stable; today it houses a restaurant featuring national dishes on its menu.

The “Istaba” saloon

The saloon is in the centre of Jelgava alongside the bridge over the Driksa River, where there is a new shoreline promenade. Wood has been used for interior design, and the saloon regularly organises musical evenings.
