This itinerary allows you to enjoy the Latvian winter at its best. It starts in the bustling capital of Riga with its Christmas market, decorations, shopping facilities, many cultural events and museums as well as a charming Old Town.
Then the route heads out to the countryside to enjoy winter pleasures at skiing and sledging slopes. After an active day its time for relaxation and papmering at a spa hotel plus the chance to experience Latvia's healthy and unique sauna rituals. For sightseeing visit Sigulda medieval castle ruins, Turaida Castle and taste home-made wine at Krimulda manor. Local wild animals such as wolves, bears, mooose and more, can easily can be observed at the Ligatne Nature Trails and afterwards enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn sledge at a nearby farm.

(V-1279) linked Kuldīga and Alsunga before a new road was built.  The lovely gravel road weaves through forests and farmland.  During appropriate weather, it can be used as an alternative road to learn about the landscapes of the Suiti region.  You can also bike down the road.

The owner has a collection of some 2,000 spoons which he has carved from 70 types of wood from trees and bushes during more than 30 years. The smallest spoon is made of osier, while the largest one, “A European Spoon,” is larger than the height of a human being. The artist also produces paintings made of wood. You can watch him at work, purchase the spoons, and tour his museum.

The Alejas bakery and guest house is located 0.5 km from the centre of Rucava. The bread here is made with natural sourdough and baked in a wood oven. Various types of rye bread (ordinary rye bread, sweet and sour rye bread with or without other ingredients, rye bread with fruit, etc.), rye bread and garlic croutons, and various types of white bread. By prior arrangement it is possible to buy bread to take home.

 The Lašu castle hill is 0.2 km from the Vecumnieki-Ilūkste road at Laši. It is an ancient Selonian castle hill, and it was populated between the 1^st millennium BC and the 10^th or 12^th century. Very little remains of the old Veclaši (Tiesenhausen) Estate, which had an impressive mansion designed in the Neo-Gothic style in the late 19^th century. What remains are an ancillary building, the foundations of the mansion, fragments of the gates, and a park. Until 1920, the estate belonged to the Pshezdzetski dynasty, and before that it was owned by the Tiesenhausen and Fittinghoff dynasties. Before visiting the location, look for photographs of the old mansion on the Internet. Sadly, the important cultural monument has not experienced any major improvements over the past 20 years.

This route involves unique views that have never been seen before in Latvia!  The impressively steep shoreline of the Baltic Sea begins a few kilometres to the North of Pāvilosta and ends shortly before Ošvalki, stretching for nearly 20 kilometres in all.  Its most impressive and unusual forms are seen between Strante and Ulmale.  The entire route leads down the western boundary of the former Iron Curtain, because the Baltic Sea coastline was militarised during the Soviet era and unavailable to most people.  Remnants of former military objects and old tank routes in the dunes can still be seen.  The largest biotopes of grey dunes stretch for several kilometres around Ventspils and Užava.  These are unusual landscapes that can seldom be seen elsewhere in Europe.  You can walk more than 10 kilometres here and not see another soul.

The spoon workshop offers useful objects such as wooden spoons, cutting boards, butter knives, pans, spatulas, etc. You can produce your own wooden spoon and look at finished spoons made of more than 17 different types of wood from Latvia. During the summer the owners offer “pancake tours” with tasty jams. You can purchase spoons and homemade wine.

The owner of the venue makes homemade wine on the basis of traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation. You can taste four different wines along with snacks and engage in philosophical discussions about winemaking recipes. You can also buy the wines.

Atrodas blakus Kalnamuižas baznīcai. Dienvidos no tās redzama grāfa Pālena kapliča, uz kuras salasāms vecs uzraksts krievu drukā “Savu mieru dodu jums”.
