This is a forested island in the Bay of Finland which is the 6th largest Estonian island and is found 14 km to the N of Tallinn. Two decades ago it was a closed zone, because the Soviet Union had a highly secretive manufacturing plant for maritime mines here.

The estate owned by the dynasty of Baron Osten-Zaken was rebuilt in 1856 and 1857, because the old estate was sacked during the Crimean War (1853-1856). At the beginning of the war, British warships bombarded Latvia's shoreline and ships with the purpose of scaring the Russian tsar. Some of the gunfire hit Kolka, which was part of the Russian Empire at that time. After the estate was destroyed, the so-called White House was built there with a series of ancillary buildings. A mantel chimney was installed on the second floor, and it was used to smoke wild game (the chimney is still there). The estate belonged to the aristocrats until 1919, when its last owner, Christian von Osten-Zaken, was shot in Tukums. An elementary school, known as the Kolka School, was installed in the White House in 1929. It remained open until 1961, when a new school was built. Crafts lessons were offered at the building until 1989, at which time it was known as the Old School or the Small School. In 1991, the Old School was taken over by the Faculty of Biology of the University of Latvia, and it has been used for summer internships for students ever since 1994. |

Ko darīt? Pa mazajām saliņām uz Vilsandi var doties ar kājām. To var īstenot tikai siltā laikā, kad nav gaidāms stiprs vējš un ir zināma laika prognoze vismaz divām tuvākajām dienām. Kā sava veida orientieris var kalpot augstsprieguma elektrolīnija. Kopumā ir jārēķinās arī ar 1 h 40 – 2 h ilgu un ~ 4 km garu gājienu. Dziļākā vieta (ja ietur pareizo „kursu”) atrodas pārgājiena sākumdaļā, kur starp saliņām izveidots laivu ceļš - ~ 1 m dziļa vieta atkarībā no vēja virziena un ūdens līmeņa. Zināmu priekšstatu par maršrutu sniegs redzamā ainava, kas paveras no skatu torņa. Kaut arī šis maršruts tiek reklamēts dažādos informatīvajos materiālos, atbildību par tā veikšanu uzņemas katrs pats! |

Professional agricultural tour with visits to local farms typical of the region. We will meet and greet you in Vilnius and have a city sightseeing tour. Next day we go to Kaunas, for professional meetings and sightseeing of the city. On the way to Riga, we visit picturesque Trakai Castle situated on a lake. At Panevezys we have a visit to a professional apple grower. In Riga we have an Old Town sightseeing tour as well as a visit to the impressive Central Market. In Bauska we have a professional visit to a farm specilaizing in implementing innovative farming (grains, vegetables, potatoes). From Riga on the way to Tallinn, we visit Sigulda town and medieval Turaida Castle with great panoramic views to the ancient Gauja Valley. In Tallinn we have an Old Town tour through narrow cobbled streets followed by a professional visit to a dairy farm in Saku, meeting with the Estonian Farm Union and visiting another cattle and crop farm near Tallinn. |

Since ancient times bread has been our staple food, and formed part of breakfast, lunch and our evening meal. We bake bread from rye, wheat, buckwheat and barley. Both fine-ground and wholemeal flour is used. Bread baking is one of the most honoured traditional skills in Latvia. Caunītes country house keeps Latvian traditions alive and demonstrates them to visitors. The house is designed and decorated in the traditional Latvian style and exudes an authentic ambience while having modern facilities. Under the guidance of the hostess, visitors will bake their own loaf of sweet-and-sour bread in a wood-fired bread oven. In Latvian families it was traditionally one of the main duties of the lady of the house to bake a week’s supply of bread for the whole family every Saturday morning. Every woman was proud of her own unique recipe and passed it down to her daughters and granddaughters through the generations. There are many traditional beliefs, sayings and riddles linked with bread in Latvian folklore. Today, there is great interest in the old recipes, bread-baking methods and the use of organic ingredients as many families are opting for a healthy lifestyle. |

Pēc 2. pasaules kara tajā atradās graudu noliktava, kinoteātris, kafejnīca un visbeidzot – naktsklubs. No 2003. gada to vairs neizmantoja. Pirms gada tika pabeigts vērienīgs projekts - sinagogas un lūgšanu nama atjaunošana, kurā izveidots sabiedrībai pieejams kultūras un informācijas centrs un pārcelta Kuldīgas novada bibliotēka. |

Bijušajā spirta brūzī ražo Gotiņas konfektes. Pils tornī izveidots Lizuma vidusskolas veidotais novadpētniecības muzejs. |

The studio specializes in creating folk costumes, weaving and all sorts of handicrafts, creating jewellery, patchwork, sewing and silk painting.
