  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

The “Sturitis” café in Madona

Located in the centre of Madona, the café offers foods based on fruit and vegetables from its own garden.
Latvian cuisine: Cold beet soup, sorrel soup, chanterelle soup, grey peas with bacon, herring, barley porridge with crickets, mushroom sauce, seven types of jams, raspberry or strawberry desserts, crepes filled with potato, pumpkin, apple and rhubarb, cottage cheese pastry, juices, herbal teas, ice cream cocktails.
Special foods: Homemade biscuit cake with fresh berries.

The “Kruzini” café

The café is located the Krūziņi guesthouse in the centre of Dundaga.

Latvian cuisine: Sauerkraut soup, grey peas with curdled milk, roast perch or cod, sorrel soup with potatoes.

Special foods: “A tower of cottage cheese” or crème from the ingredients of the Dundaga Dairy.

The “Pagrabins” café

“Pagrabiņš” is located in the Old Town of the city, in the historic town hall building. Its interior preserves historic vaults and stone walls that have been decorated with photo exhibitions. In summer, the guests can enjoy their meal on a terrace over the small River Alekšupīte.

The “Skriveru majas saldejums” café

The family enterprise (formed in 2006) makes home-made ice-cream from fruit and berries. They make both classical – such as plombieres, cream, joghurt ice-creams and sorbets and nowadays cuisine’s „miracle”- sprat, blue cheese, horse-radish and potato ice-cream with tomato sauce. Till now 80 different ice-cream recipes have been tried. If you book a visit beforehand, you can have an excursion and learn everything about the process of making ice-cream from the chefs themselves. In the cafe it is possible to try different ice-cream dishes – each one with a different ice-cream sauce. The cafe also welcomes pets!

Viitna Tavern

Viitna Tavern is one of the few 19th C tavern and post station buildings preserved in Estonia to date. Originally landlords and other rich folk had their rooms and a horse stable in the building’s left wing; today it is a canteen and Estonian handicraft shop. The right wing was for peasant folk chambers and a stable; today it houses a restaurant featuring national dishes on its menu.

Kafejnica "Celavejs" (t/c Sala)

The cafe is situated in the shopping centre Sala in Jekabpils, on the right back of the river Daugava. The cafe’s premises are comfortable and decorated with fresh flowers. It is a place where you can have either breakfast, dinner or supper.

The “Kungu rija” restaurant

The restaurant is on the edge of the Turaida-Ragana road. The granary was built in 2004 in line with historical traditions. It resembles the Turaida Estate granary that was built by Baron Holstein.

Latvian cuisine: Smoked catfish, leg of lamb, roast veal, venison or pork, stuffed duck or goose.

Legendary restaurant Halinga is located on the roadside of Via Baltica half an hour’s drive from Pärnu in the direction of Tallinn.
