Saloons, cafes and other places in small towns and the countryside which offer tasty dishes made of local products and on the basis of traditional Latvian recipes – ones which differ from region to region.

  • Special programmes are offered to visitors, with meals, stories about holiday and everyday traditions, and songs. Sometimes visitors are involved in preparing the food.
  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.
  • Providers of Latvian foods also use ethnographic styles for interior design, as well as dishes, furniture, textiles, etc., from local craftspeople.

The “Oskrogs” café

The café is located 1.5 kilometres from the Ķegums hydropower plant. Home-grown ingredients are used to produce berry sauces, pumpkin, and marinated cornichons in brine.

The “Skriveru majas saldejums” café

The family enterprise (formed in 2006) makes home-made ice-cream from fruit and berries. They make both classical – such as plombieres, cream, joghurt ice-creams and sorbets and nowadays cuisine’s „miracle”- sprat, blue cheese, horse-radish and potato ice-cream with tomato sauce. Till now 80 different ice-cream recipes have been tried. If you book a visit beforehand, you can have an excursion and learn everything about the process of making ice-cream from the chefs themselves. In the cafe it is possible to try different ice-cream dishes – each one with a different ice-cream sauce. The cafe also welcomes pets!

The “Ratnica” saloon

The saloon is in the restored complex of the Smuku Estate (16th century). During the summer, meals are served on the terrace of the “Zirgu stallis” guesthouse, while during the winter, they are served alongside the fireplace in the bar.

Latvian cuisine: Milk dumpling soup with dried bacon (Kurzeme lunch), herring baked on coals, stacked rye bread with whipped cream, “countryside milk bun” (fresh milk, sugar, cinnamon, berry sauce), a cheesy potato with honey-roasted pork.

The “Serpentins” café

The "Serpentīns" café is on the side of the Ventspils road (A10) and near the Strazde Lutheran Church. The lovely building has large windows. The café works with local farms and organises evenings of live music.

Latvian cuisine: Oatmeal, potato pancakes, farmers’ omelettes, farmers’ breakfasts, baked cod, sautéed salmon, roast leg of pork, grilled pork with rhubarb sauce, hot rhubarb cobbler, Latvian beers.

The “Aglonas Cakuli” guesthouse

The guesthouse is on the shore of Lake Ciritis with a view of lake islands.  Guests are offered Lettigalian dishes, including ones made from lake fish.

The restaurant is at the edge of the Vidzeme Highway (A2). It is a lovely log building with a straw roof and an antique interior. Dishes are based on ancient traditions merged with the requirements of modern clients.
