  • Menus use local names for dishes along with explanations and a discussion of the local dialect.

Restaurant APARJODS

The restaurant is at the edge of the Vidzeme Highway (A2). It is a lovely log building with a straw roof and an antique interior. Dishes are based on ancient traditions merged with the requirements of modern clients.

Latvian cuisine: Cold soup, dumpling soup, grey peas with bacon, wheat grain porridge, lampreys in mustard sauce, pike-perch grilled on coals, roast pig’s ear, roast pork leg, chicken livers in a creamy sauce, stacked rye bread, cottage cheese dessert with cranberry sauce.

Located near the train station, the café has a bakery in the basement and a shop and café on the first floor. It offers single and multi-layer torts, various types of cakes (including cream cakes, apple cakes Vecrīga cakes, honey cakes, éclairs and roulettes), pastries (cinnamon, poppy seed, cottage cheese), pierogi (cheese, bacon, etc.), sweet pretzels, plates of meats and savoury snacks.

The café is located 200 m south of the Stāmeriena Castle in Vecstāmeriena.  It is in one of the historical buildings of the local baronial estate and has an antique interior.  It is possible to try out dishes typical for Gulbene district.

The restaurant is alongside the Villa Elizabete guesthouse with a summer terrace and a fireplace room and library where diners can enjoy their meals when it is cold outside.

Igate castle Mill cafe

The saloon is at the edge of the Murjāņi-Limbaži road (P9) and alongside the Igate Castle. It is built on the foundations of a former windmill, and the wheel of the mill has been preserved. The old watermill is still hard at work and is used to mill grain for traditional porridge and buns. The saloon works with local farmers.

Latvian cuisine: Mushroom soup, barley porridge with meat, barley buns, grit sausage with lingonberry sauce, crepes with jam, potato pancakes, fried plaice or pike, stacked rye bread.

Special foods: Sautéed rabbit, stuffed filet of turkey.
