This convent-type castle was built in the mid-13th century by the bishopric of Piltene. Annexes were added in the 16th and 19th centuries to create a typical internal courtyard. The Neo-Gothic forms of the castle’s façade date back to the 1830s. From the 16th century to the 1920, the castle was owned by the noble Behr family. After it was burned down during the 1905 Revolution, the castle was rebuilt in two years’ time. The castle is known for ghost stories, tales of elf weddings, and stains of blood in the Red Room that are supposedly the result of a murder. A fireplace was built to hide the stains, but they reappeared. Since the privatisation of the castle, the interior has been restored with halls and cellars that are decorated with elements that are typical to the castle. Its rooms and viewing tower are open to the public. In the park, visitors will find the Alley of Love and the elf oak tree. |

The house is on the eastern shore of Lake Lubāns with a wonderful view of Latvia’s largest lake. The owners prepare dishes from local freshwater fish, using old recipes and ones that they have developed themselves. "Zvejnieki" is the participant of Latgalian culinary heritage. Latvian cuisine: Porridge with homemade jam, fish soup, bream or pike cakes, smoked carp, sautéed wild duck, sautéed elk, wild berries with milk. Covered with rocks and with small capes and inlets, this is the eastern shore of the Bay of Rīga and the only place in Latvia where sandstone outcrops are found. These are the result of the abrasive effects of waves between Tūja and Vitrupe. Among the most distinguished of these outcrops are the Veczemi cliffs, which are less than half a kilometre long and up to four metres high. The area has been improved for tourists. It has to be said that this part of the shoreline changes very often, particularly after large storms.

This long-distance tour follows the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route from the Lithuanian coast, starting on the island of Rusnė and continuing to the Curonian Spit, running along the Baltic Sea coast to Cape Kolka and finally reaching Rīga. On this route you will hike some sections of the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route and experience the diversity of coastal landscapes: rocky beaches, steep shores, overgrown beaches, bird migration sites, vast sandy beaches. You will walk on solitary beaches with no-one in sight for several kilometres just to suddenly find yourself in lively resort towns. There are both sections of hiking and bus transfers along the route. Initially you will visit the peculiar island of Rusnė with its bird migration sites, observation towers and the delta Crossing the Lithuanian/Latvian border on foot you will stop over at the Pape Nature Park and enjoy its lighthouse, wild horses, the authentic fishermen village and local museum. The walk on lone beaches takes you to the top of the highest dune in Latvia – the Pūsēnu dune – and afterwards continues to reach the village of Bernāti. Next on the route is the windy seaside city of Liepāja, also known as the Latvian capital of rock music. Karosta is another distinctive site in Liepāja – it is the former military town and nearly every street of this part of the city has some footprints of its military heritage. Heading further, your feet will take you through the solitary beaches of Ziemupe to the village of Pāvilosta. If you are lucky, you might find some ambers washed ashore. Pāvilosta is a small charming village with a marina and some notes of smoked fish lingering in the air. Moving on, from Ventspils through Slītere National Park, through the Livonian fishermen villages to finally reach the Kolka Cape – the meeting point of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. Also, a top site for bird watching. At the end of the tour, the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route leads to Engure Nature Park, meandering through reed trails running between the villages of Mērsrags and Engure. The tour ends in Jūrmala with its wide sandy Beaches, the bustling urban life of a resort town, impressive villas and summer cottages, and the Ragakāpa Nature Park in the resort’s neighborhood Lielupe. |

Located in the centre of Dikļi, the 1896 castle was renovated into a four-star hotel in 2003. The castle offers a look at antique furnishings, fireplaces and ovens, as well as paintings by Latvian artists. Two restaurants (summer and winter) offer fine dining and an individualised approach. The castle works with local farms. Latvian cuisine: Beefsteak, grilled trout, smoked wild board bacon, filet of pike from Lake Burtnieki, seasonal mushrooms and berries. This ancient Courlandian castle hill has remnants of an ancient city. Historical sources indicate that in 1263, the Courlandians handed the castle over to the Livonian Order without a battle and that the castle was then burned down. The name of the place, Skābaržkalns, has to do with the name of the city, because hornbeam trees in the area were once known as grobi. |

The watermill was restored in the 1920s and renewed operations in 1992. It offers a look at historical mechanisms and the milling process, while the café offers pancakes made of the flour that is ground at the mill. Forts were built and rebuilt at this location for many centuries by Germans, Swedes and Russians. In 1912, several forts were erected at Mangaļsala and Bolderāja. There were two forts with 254-mm cannons, six with 152-mm cannons, and three with 138-mm cannons. Each fort had two cannons.
