Along the A9 road and 500 metres from the turn in the direction of Rīga in Lestene is a memorial by Ojārs Feldbergs which was set up in 1991 in the former Rumbas homestead to commemorate defenders of the Kurzeme fortress. Despite the fact that the Soviet forces were ten times larger, the Latvian troops allowed some 300,000 Latvian war refugees to escape the horrors of the Soviet Union. |

This farm offers apple, pear, cherry and plum trees, black currants, red currents, gooseberries, raspberries, quince, chokeberries and sweet mountain-ash. The owners will teach you about establishing fruit orchards and growing fruit trees. Candies made at the farm are for sale. |

A tour of professional farms to offer a look at modern and technologically developed farms. During the introductory day, participants will tour Rīga, which is part of the UNESCO List of World Heritage, and the Rīga Central Market, which is one of the largest closed markets of its type in Europe. The next day there will be a meeting with specialists from the Latvian Agriculture Ministry and agricultural NGOs. Next we will tour an ecological facility for farm waste, which is a pan-European initiative in the context of which heat that is manufactured is used to heat greenhouses, thus ensuring an ideal environment for farming (flowers and tomatoes). We will visit innovative farms that collect birch juice for products such as biological birch juice wine (rose, semi-sec), biological birch juice foaming wine, birch juice lemonade, and syrup. The next morning will begin with a visit to a farm that produces high-quality vegetables and potatoes, successfully dealing with the storage and sale of it produce, as well as with logistical aspects of the process. Along the way, we will visit the ruins of the Koknese castle, which is on the banks of Latvia’s legendary Daugava River. We will also visit a farm that grows hemp for various food products. We will spend the night at an aristocratic estate that is now a complex for accommodations and spa treatments. The next morning, we will be off to one of Latvia’s newest beer breweries for a tour and tastings. Around noon, we will visit a farm that manufactures co-generated biomass head during the winter and heats greenhouses. We will return to Rīga in the evening. |

Gaiziņkalns Hill is the highest hill in Latvia, and it is a typical example of the hillocks of the Vidzeme highlands. This is a place of wonderful landscapes, even though there are not all that many good viewing areas. At the centre of this park is Gaiziņkalns Hill itself – the highest place in Latvia and the second highest in the Baltic States (311.6 metres above sea level). The viewing tower, alas is not open to the public, because it is in dangerous condition. There is a well-appointed hiking trail around Gaiziņkalns Hill, and during the winter the hill and its surroundings are popular for downhill and cross-country skiing. Lake Viešūrs (Lake Kaķītis) is popular among licensed fishermen. This territory is part of a region of protected landscapes around Vestiena. |

The museum was established in 1954 and features the traditions of Latvian and Livonian fishermen, sailors and farmers and their lives and residences. There are fishermen’s homesteads with net huts, smokehouses, granaries, etc. There is a collection of fishing boats and the largest assemblage of anchors in the Baltic States (more than 100 anchors, the heaviest one weighing 22 tonnes). The windmill was transported from the Užava Parish. The 19th century Smiltnieki home features authentic household objects. The newest thing at the museum is the Lielirbe Baptist Prayer House, which is nearly 100 years old. A narrow-gauge railroad runs down the 1.3 km Mountain line from May 1 to October 31 every year, and at its end is its turntable. The building of the museum was designed on the basis of the Mazirbe train station. The museum is in the Jūrmala park, with playgrounds for children and the Anchor trail. |

Uz bunkuru ved meža taka ar informāciju par dažādiem mežabrāļu piedzīvojumiem un cīņām. Bunkura pazemes daļā apskatāmi vēsturiskie priekšmeti, kas viņus pavadīja dzīvē un cīņā. During Soviet times, Vaiņode was the site of one of the Soviet Union’s largest military airfields in the Baltic States. During the period of Latvia’s independence, the country’s first dirigibles were based here. Eventually their hangars were dismantled and brought to Rīga, where they were used for the Rīga Central Market. They are still there today. Some of Latvia’s first gliders took off from Vaiņode. During the Soviet occupation, the airfield was home to an air defence and destroyer squadron, with 38 SU-27 “Flanker” destroyers on site. After the restoration of Latvia’s independence, the Vaiņode airfield was dismantled in part, and the big plates of concrete that covered the runways and the rest of the airfield were used to improve the Liepāja port. There are still 16 hangars at the airport, and 1,800 of the formerly 2,500 metres long runway are also still there. Līdz 18. gs. šajā vietā bija koka baznīca, kamēr 1798. g. uzcēla mūra baznīcu, kas cieta 1. pasaules karā, bet 2. pasaules kara laikā to uzspridzināja. Tikai pusgadsimtu vēlāk - 1991. gadā tika uzsākti atjaunošanas darbi, kas joprojām turpinās. Tagad redzamais dievnams ir iepriekšējā līdzinieks. |

Karņicka kalns pēc savas izcelsmes nav kalns, bet gan Daugavas ielejas nogāzes daļa ar labu skatu uz Krāslavas mazstāvu koka apbūvi. Ar šo vietu saistīts traģisks nostāsts par poļu virsnieka Josifa Karņicka un grāfa Plātera meitas mīlestību, kurai nebija lemts piepildīties tā laika „paražu” dēļ. Tā rezultātā abi nelaimīgie nolemj izdarīt pašnāvību. Virsnieks nošaujas, bet Emīliju pēdējā brīdī izglābj kalpone, neļaujot tai izlēkt pa pils logu. J. Karņicka pašnāvības vietā ir uzstādīts piemineklis. Nedaudz tālāk – rietumu virzienā guļ t.s. Austriņa akmens, pie kura 1909. gadā iedvesmojies un radījis latviešu rakstnieks Antons Austriņš. |

Eine der größten Kirchen Osteuropas (bis 16. Jh.) un die einzige mittelalterliche Kirche Estlands mit zwei Türmen. Wurde in 13. – 16. Jh. gebaut, zerstört im Laufe des Livländischen Kriegs. Im Chorteil der Kirche befindet sich das Museum der Universität Taru (früher – eine Bibliothek). Die Türme sind renoviert und in denen sind die Aussichtsplätze eingerichtet. |

This is the thickest common juniper (Juniperus communis) in Latvia and the Baltic States. It stands in the middle of a field and looks wonderful. The tree is sometimes known as the Rieteklis juniper, because the Latvian poet Rieteklis (Jūlijs Eduars Balodis, 1856-1940) like to sit under it.
