This is a territory that is unique at the Latvian and the Baltic level, one which stretches from Valmiera to the Gulbene District. Here we find the irregular Gauja River valley with a dense system of ancient rivers. The meadows on the banks of these rivers are important in terms of biological diversity. There are stands of oak and broad-leaf trees. Many rare and protected birds live and next here – the corn-crake, the woodpecker, etc. The territory is excellent for bird watching, nature studies, ecological tourism and various kinds of active tourism.

Baltic States are lucky to have plenty of untouched natural territories. During the Cambrian, Silurian and Devonian eras, the territory of the current Baltic States was often covered by seawater, which is why there are places where lots of geological evidence can be found about these periods in history.  These are manifested not just in fossils and various geological objects, but also in the unique landscape. For example, The Gauja River basin is an outstanding locations for Devonian cliffs and caves. Other interesting elements of the terrain relate to the development of the Baltic Sea in the past – the Baltic Ice Sea and the Littorine Sea. That is well presented at he landscape of hillocks and valleys in the Slītere National Park. Many forests  and bogs have remained virtually untouched as biotopes here.  The Ķemeri, Slītere national parks were all established to protect wetlands. Rivers in the Baltic States have not been straightened and dense areas of buildings are not common.  There are two “lands of lakes” in the Baltic States – Latgale and Augštaitija. The Baltic States are at the crossroads of the living areas of many different plants and animals, and that is why “northern,” “southern,” “western” and “eastern” species can all be found here. Some national parks have been established to protect distinctive local cultural heritage.

The Barefoot Path begins at the Valguma Pasaule Recreation Centre by Lake Valgums, which is surrounded by forest. The recreation centre includes a hotel and restaurant, and offers nature-based services such as the Barefoot Path and other walking trails.

The Barefoot Path is a 2.6 km long trail through the natural environment, along which visitors walk barefoot and experience a variety of surfaces including pine cones, glass balls, small stones and shingles of various shapes, moss, fine sand, clay, river water, turf, gravel, reeds, chipped wood, pinewood logs, wooden poles and millstones. Walking barefoot has a number of positive health effects:

it strengthens the immune system;

it improves blood circulation and stabilises blood pressure;

it strengthens the leg and foot muscles, joints and ligaments; and

it enhances relaxation, and aids mental and physiological stability.

The walk is led by an English-speaking guide. Before the walk, visitors receive a briefing. It is recommended that visitors wear comfortable outdoor clothing, appropriate for the weather. After walking the barefoot path, visitors usually feel energised, strong and happy. The walk finishes with a relaxing herbal foot bath.

Усадьба Салос и ее парк расположены на острове озера Двирагис, чьи контуры с высоты птичьего полета напоминают силуэт Литвы на географической карте. В восточной части усадьбы находится парк смешанной планировки. Это один из старейших парков в Литве. Еще во времена хозяйствования Радзивиллов здесь был лесопарк с запретом на вырубку деревьев. В парке преобладали лиственные деревья местных пород: клены, липы, ясени, тополя сереющие, которым сейчас сравнялось двести лет. По берегу озера проходила тропа, соединявшая аллею с парковой дорожкой. Сегодня здесь сохранились зеленые насаждения, фрагменты аллей.

Above and below the town of Kuldīga, the Venta River is distinguished by a variety of biotopes – hillside forests, sandstone and dolomite cliffs, meadows, protected plants and animals, and diverse landscapes. There are popular tourism objects in this part of Kurzeme – the Venta dam, the stone bridge of Kuldīga, the Veckuldīga castle hill, etc. An ecological tourism trail runs along the banks of the Venta, and a bicycling trail has been installed on its left bank.

После образования водохранилища Рижской ГЭС – это остров, до этого – полуостров левобережья Даугавы. Во время Первом мировой войны на острове Смерти происходили длительные бои латышских стрелков с превосходящей по численности немецкой армией. 25-го декабря 1916-го года немцы использовали против латышских стрелков отравляющие газы. Чтобы увековечить память об этих событиях, в 1924-м году по проекту архитектора Э. Лаубе на северном берегу острова Смерти установили памятник павшим латышским стрелкам. До острова Смерти можно доплыть на лодке. Стоит осмотреть находящиеся на острове окопы и места захоронений. На северо-западном берегу острова расположен причал для лодок, а недалеко от него – место для отдыха. Недавно был восстановлен фрагмент окопов с землянками. Бои на острове Смерти описал Александр Грин в своем легендарном труде «Души в снежном вихре».

Единственный в Латвии советский военный объект такого вида и масштаба – часть дальней связи, которая была предусмотрена для поддержания связи с кораблями и подводными лодками Советской армии во всех (?) морях и океанах мира. В центре располагалась одна, а по периметру шесть вышек на высоте 200 м. В наше время сохранились некоторые из них, которые используются операторами мобильной связи. Ходят слухи, что комплекс так и не был ни разу включен. Великолепно просматривается Упишкалнский комплекс с дороги Скрунда – Кулдига, какие-то 3 км перед объездной Кулдигской дорогой (населенный пункт - Райдстация).

This tour will take you on a walk through the Curonian Spit from Nida to Smiltynė. The Curonian Spit National Park is located on a long, sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. A sand beach of ~50 km is running on the western side of the dune spit, while the shore of the Curonian Lagoon is shallow and characteristic of ridged bays overgrown with reeds. The Baltic Coastal Hiking Route starts in the centre of Nida near the port. In Nida, it runs along the Curonian Lagoon promenade, offering beautiful views of the spacious waters. From Nida to Bulvikio Cape, the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route winds along small forest paths leading up and down pine-covered dunes; in the village of Preila, the trail runs along the promenade of the lagoon. Between Pervalka and Juodkrantė, the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route leads along a beautiful, sandy beach. You can take the Raganų kalnas (Hill of Witches) trail in Juodkrantė. The route alternates between the Baltic Sea coast, the dunes and the Curonian Lagoon until it finally reaches the ferry, which will take you to Klaipėda.

The nature park in the city of Jūrmala was set up to protect dune, pine forest and shoreline habitats. This park features one of the most attractive nature trails in the Rīga area, and it is found near the famous Ragakāpa dune, which can be as much as 17 metres high. This is an excellent opportunity to study dune habitats and the plants, birds, insects, etc., which live there. Visitors can also see pine trees that are 100 years old and older.
