This is a part of Latvia in which various manifestations related to layers of earth made up of water-soluble lime can be found. The most unusual elements here are Lake Vecezers and Lake Linezers. The water of the latter lake has flowed underground several times over the last few decades, with the remaining lake hole as much as nine metres deep. No one can fully explain how this happens. A tourist trail encircles Lake Linezers.

The Alejas bakery and guest house is located 0.5 km from the centre of Rucava. The bread here is made with natural sourdough and baked in a wood oven. Various types of rye bread (ordinary rye bread, sweet and sour rye bread with or without other ingredients, rye bread with fruit, etc.), rye bread and garlic croutons, and various types of white bread. By prior arrangement it is possible to buy bread to take home. |

Approximately 200 metres to the North-East from the Liv People's Centre, along the Mazirbe-Košrags road, there is the Seppes homestead. The little log granary was built in the 1920s and 1930s by an Estonian fisherman and builder who arrived in Mazirbe from Saaremaa. He was called Jēkabs Jaga. On the other side of the road is the Kalši home, which was built in the early 20th century. It has been restored, but the bricks that were made in a local kiln were preserved for its walls. |

This route invites you to visit the Kurzeme region and try the traditional dishes there. You will feast on traditional smoked fish at Dieniņas Fishermen's Yard, take a masterclass in baking “sklandrausis”, a traditional carrot pie, visit fishing villages in Slītere National Park, and savour refined meals in Ventspils city pubs. Nice attractions en route are the steep coast of the Baltic Sea in Jūrkalne and the medieval town of Kuldīga. In a 19th century watermill, which nowadays is an organic farm, the hostess will give you a masterclass in cooking regional dishes from fallow deer, trout, vegetables and fruit. The last stop on the return back to Riga is the Chocolate Museum at Pūre. |

The saloon is on the edge of the Rīga-Liepāja highway (A9) at the 22 km road marker. Most of the dishes are based on ingredients from the forest. This is the only Soviet military object of its type and scope in Latvia – a long-distance communications base which was supposedly used to maintain contacts with Soviet naval ships and submarines all around the world. The facility had a central tower and six perimeter towers, each more than 200 metres high. Some of the towers remain in place and are used for mobile communications. It is rumoured that the Soviet communications system was never once turned on. The complex at Upīškalns can be seen by driving down the Skrunda-Kuldīga road. It is some 3 km before the Kuldīga ring road, at a populated location called Raidstacija.

The Raudondvaris Castle is on the right bank of the Neveža River in Raundondvaris. The estate and a park that covers 3.8 ha has two buildings, an orangery, a stable for horses and a cellar. Alongside the estate in 1834 was a park that was rebuilt in the 20th century with new plants and flowerbeds that featured ancient types of roses. The northern part of the park is forested, with maple, pine and linden trees, as well as Edelweiss that blooms in the spring. Paths in the park lead to a local environmentally protected area. |

Laimonis and Ilga Veidemanis lived in Roja 20 or 30 years ago. They were deaf and loved to produce models of sailing ships of various sizes. This was based on a dream about the big ships of their ancestors and the wide seas upon which the couple could not sail. The models are very precise, designed with much care and love. The couple never learned the secrets of ship models, but their collection has been inherited by Laimonis’ granddaughter, who wants to display the wonderful collection and her grandfather’s careful work to the public.
