The Markova information trail is the most diverse and impressive trails along the upper reaches of the Daugava river in terms of objects and landscapes. The visitor will go to the top of the Markova castle hill, which offers a great view of the river valley. The deep Putāni stream valley will be crossed to get to the cliffs on the right bank of the Daugava. Here, the visitor will see one of the most unusual landscapes of Latvia’s river valleys. There is the Slutišķi village of Old Believers, along with the mighty Slutišķi cliff in the background. The trail is 1.6km long, and it will take an hour or two, particularly if the visitor chooses to tour the village and the homes of the Old Believers.

Pēteris Barisons (1904-1947) was a Latvian composer and conductor, and this is his birthplace – the Skudras homestead. The Saltupju sacred stream is 1.3 km to the Northwest of the centre of Aknīste, near the small valley of the Dienvidsusēja River. The stream has been known as a source for medical treatments since antiquity. It is said that streams which flow to the East always have medicinal water, particularly on Easter morning for those who rinse their eyes in it. The water contains iron compounds, which is seen in the brown sediment (the result of iron bacteria). Alongside the stream is a stone with a small indentation, and it is thought to have been a cult stone long ago. A sacred linden tree grows at the edge of the valley. The stream can be seen with good reason as one of the most outstanding streams in all of Latvia. |

In the Berzini homestead they bake exceptionally tasty wheat and rye bread in accordance with the old folk recipes. The taste and smell is the result of baking bread in a special oven which is more than 70 years old. It is possible to order bread, or, having booked a visit beforehand, to make and bake your own bread loaf. The owners will teach you bread baking traditions and use recipes from their ancestors to bake loaves in a true bread oven. |

This is an uncommon trail. The visitor will learn all about quite “ordinary” trees such as the oak, the linden, the hazelnut, the fir and the pine. The information is quite interesting, however, making use of the heritage of Latvian folklore. The site is located near the Zvārte rock. Visitors will spend around one hour on the trail.

The castle hill of Rasnupļi (Opiņķi) is a significant place on the foot of the hill inhabited by ancient Latgalians.
You will notice Velna ala (Devil’s cave) also called small Staburags of Latgale (ancient cult place)
in the right side of the Vīce river. It is a small natural geologically unique formation (length – 3m, width –
2m, high – 0,6m). There are only two such caves in Latvia. There are 5 – 6 m long stalactites.

This is an ecological and biodynamic medicinal plant farm that is run by two sisters who produce herbal teas and spices. Educational programmes offer information about the plants and their medicinal properties. You can lease bikes to ride down the bike paths of the Žemaitija National Park. |

This is a brewery in a lovely part of Lithuania known as Little Switzerland, surrounded by forests, lakes and castle hills. "Čizo" beer is light, unfiltered and alive, and it is produced on the basis of ancient traditions with forest bee honey. The brewer has not just a recipe, but also equipment so that he can offer a look at ancient methods of beer brewing. |

The Lejenieki homestead is 1.1 km north of Bangas. Vilis Plūdons (1874-1940) was an outstanding Latvian poet, a representative of the style of National Romanticism, and a schoolteacher. His real name was Vilis Lejnieks, and he was born in at the Lejenieki homestead in the Bauska region. His father was Jānis Lejnieks. As a boy, Vilis was enchanted by fairy tales told by his granny and by folk songs that she sang. Plūdons is buried nearby in the family cemetery. Lejenieki offers an exhibition about the poet’s life and work. The local sauna features sculptures of rabbits, thus recalling Plūdons’ poem, “Rabbit Sauna.” |
