The firing range at Skujnieki was once used for summer sports, as well as training in the use of firearms. The Defence Ministry still uses the facility from time to time. The central building of the facility was built in 1982, and its façade is decorated with text in the Russian language: “Слава КПСС” (“All Honour to the Soviet Communist Party).

At the estuary of the Inčupe River, there is the White Dune, which is around 18 metres high and is the most lovely element of the Vidzeme shoreline among those that have been created by the wind, sand and sea. There is a wooden footpath (the Saulriets trail) which is meant to view, but also protect the dune. It has a viewing area, too. The territory to the south of the river is in the Piejūra Nature Park.

There is also Milk Museum located where you can follow the milk route from a cow to the tables, also possible to try some old fashioned practical jobs like butter making. Further on the tour turns sweet. Visit candy factory in Saldus where traditional hand-made toffees are made. Then on menu is ice-cream at Druva. Next - sightseeing at Jelgava which used to be the main seat of the Duke of Courland. Visit cheese producer at Eleja and before returning to Riga visit splendid Rundale Palace which is regarded as a beautiful pearl of the Baltics. |

The castle hill of Rasnupļi (Opiņķi) is a significant place on the foot of the hill inhabited by ancient Latgalians.
You will notice Velna ala (Devil’s cave) also called small Staburags of Latgale (ancient cult place)
in the right side of the Vīce river. It is a small natural geologically unique formation (length – 3m, width –
2m, high – 0,6m). There are only two such caves in Latvia. There are 5 – 6 m long stalactites.

The smoke sauna is an important part of everyday life in the Võru community in Estonia. It is the centre of a rich set of traditions including the actual bathing customs, the skills of making bathing whisks, building and repairing saunas, and smoking meat in the sauna. The sauna is a building or room heated by a stove covered with stones and with an elevated platform for sitting or lying. It has no chimney, and the smoke from the burning wood circulates in the room. People usually go into the sauna together and remain until they are sweating. Water is thrown on the heated stones to produce hot steam-laden air and bathers beat their bodies with whisks to remove dead skin and stimulate blood circulation. After sweating, whisking, relaxing and possible healing procedures, people cool themselves outside and rinse their bodies with water. The procedure is then repeated. The smoke sauna tradition is primarily a family custom, usually practised on Saturdays, but also before major festivals or family events. Its main function is to relax the body and mind. Families take turns hosting each other. Usually an older family member is responsible for preparing the sauna, accompanied by the children who gradually acquire the necessary skills. The smoke sauna tradition is part of the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. |

Found on the right bank of the Daugava where the little Karikste river flows into the Daugava, all that remains of the castle today is a set of ruined walls and foundations. The castle was built by the Livonian Order in 1224, and it was inhabited until the mid-17th century, when it was sacked during the Polish-Swedish war. The ruins offer a good view of the local gravel road that goes along the right bank of the river valley.

This is one of Estonia’s most beautiful karst fields, covering 125 hectares which feature different karst processes – subterranean streams, the dry Jõelähtme River bed, karst streams, funnels, ditches, caves, cliffs, a unique rock “mushroom,” etc. During the spring, the field is flooded, but at other times of the year, its contents are easily visible.

This is one of the most beautiful gardens in Nīca, particularly featuring hostas and maple trees. There are more than 130 varieties of hostas, as well as 25 maple trees. The large pond features fish that can be fed, and visitors will enjoy the beauty of the garden. Guests will particularly enjoy the impressive homestead sign that was created after a long search. This is an enormously important territory for migrating birds. The most commonly spotted protected species of birds are the velvet scoter, the black scoter, the long-tailed duck, the little gull, the red-throated and black-throated loon, and the black guillemot. The territory is opposite the Dundaga and Ventspils administrative districts, and it covers 172,412 hectares.

The current exhibition is in a building that used to house the Latgale Central Museum, and it speaks to the 700 years of the history of Rēzekne. It features typical ceramics and other artworks from Latgale. A separate exposition, “A Miracle Created by the Transformation of Clay and Fire,” speaks to the history of ceramics, and the museum also features pottery workshops where people can watch experts using ancient traditions to create new forms of pottery. Outside of the museum is a monument to the distinguished Lettigalian poet Antons Kūkojs (1940-2007). |

SIA N. Bomja bakery “Lielezers” is a sole proprietor enterprise of Normunds Bomis, founded in 1991 and located 3 km from Limbaži. The story of this bakery started more than 25 years ago, when craftsman Alberts Blumbergs’ knowledge and experience was put into practice and very delicious rye bread was made. In the bakery, traditional salinātā rye bread is made by hand, maturing scalded flour in aspen tubs for 24 hours and fermenting with sourdough. Salinātā rye bread is registered in the EU food quality scheme as a product with traditional speciality guaranteed. Bread baking is led by the experienced master bakers Lāsma Bome and Valters Kanopa.
