Photography was banned along the shore, and we asked the border guards whether we could take pictures of the rare plant right there, or whether we would have to take it away.
Back in the 1970s, nature photographer Viesturs Klimpiņš and I went to the coast at Kurzeme to photograph protected species of plants. Užava was our destination, because in the dunes you could find a very uncommon and protected plant – the sea holly. Armed border guards accompanied us. Photography was banned along the shore, and we asked the border guards whether we could take pictures of the rare plant right there, or whether we would have to take it away. They let us photograph it there. After all, it is a very uncommon species, indeed.
A coast guard facility was located near the village of Užava during Soviet times. There is a lack of information about the use of the facility at this time.
