Best time to visit: April-October Path cover: Forest path, footbridges Getting there: Take the Rīga-Ķemeri train to Ķemeri, after which you will have to walk around 4 km. If you are driving, take the Rīga-Ventspils highway (A10 and E22) to the Ķemeri cemetery, where you will turn left and travel approximately 3 km to the car park at the edge of the heath. |
A brief description of the routeThe Ķemeri National Park was established in 1997. The sulphurous water that was once the reason for the establishment of a very popular spa at Ķemeri is still there. One-quarter of Latvia’s endangered plant species can be found in the park. Among animals, the park is home to the rarely seen sea eagle, the whimbrel and the eagle-owl. The Great Ķemeri Heaths nature trail was established in 2000, and it today it is the longest and most impressive path of swamp footbridges in Latvia. The circular path starts and ends at the same location. The aim of the path is to introduce visitors to swamp landscapes and to the flora and fauna of the area.Points of interestThe Great Ķemeri Heaths: The region is an important place for migratory nesting birds. The small lakes and pools of the region are most beautiful.A viewing tower: The tower, which is four metres high, provides a lovely view of the surrounding area.
