The little known eastern regions of the BalticsLatvia, Lithuania (11 days)On this tour, you will visit the eastern regions of Latvia and Lithuania - areas that are little known among tourists, but very interesting in terms of diverse cultures and traditions that have for centuries been influenced by the proximity of Russia. Your tour will begin in Riga, and take you along the banks of Latvia’s largest river, the Daugava. You will bicycle all the way to the country’s second city, Daugavpils. Along the way you will see lovely rural landscapes, and you will have an opportunity to visit rural craftsmen and farmers to learn about their lives. Then you will cross the Lithuanian border and pass through the youngest Lithuanian city, Visaginas. It was build during Soviet times for the employees of the Ignalina nuclear power plant. Then you will spend three days on your bike to visit the national parks of the Augštaitija region. These feature many lakes and small water mills. Many of these have cosy pubs where you can enjoy the national dish of Lithuania - "cepelinai", washed down with local beer. Along the way you will pass through ethnographic villages, and you will have many opportunities for a swim in one of the many lakes. Finally, you will take the train to the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius, where you will spend two nights. Read more about protected nature areas en route in the description below.
