The routes of Latvia's statehood

Latvia starts its way towards celebrations of the 100th anniversary in November 18, 2018. To get to know the country better, it can be explored by 7 special touring routes – the Routes of Latvia’s Statehood. These routes allow you to learn about aspects of Latvia’s history, personalities, places and events that facilitated the establishment of the state and the emergence of its national identity. 1. The Daugava Road route is named after the River Daugava that is poetically called the Latvian Destiny’s River and has flowed through our land and our history as a large and full-blooded artery of water. The route tells the statehood story related to Latgale, the Eastern part of the country.
2. The Light’s Road route leads through the North-Eastern part of the country highlighting personalities and milestone events related to education and national identity awareness.
3. The Mara’s Road route focuses on introduction and history of Catholicism in Latgale, the Eastern region and runs along an ancient trading route that once connected the present territories of Lithuania, Latvia, Russia and Poland.
4. The Baltic’s Road route crosses central Latvia and commemorates the unique demonstration called the Baltic Way – some two million people, the residents of three countries joined hands in a single chain to link the capital cities of the three nations – Vilnius, Rīga and Tallinn on August 23, 1989 to recall the conclusion of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact between Germany and the USSR. The Baltic States lost their independence as a result of the pact.
5. The Jacob’s Road route in the North-West of the country lets to know the 40 year period of economical, industrial and cultural flourishing and prosperity in the 17th century under Duke Jacob of Courland who developed ship building industry, the first factories, introduced new methods in agriculture.
6. The Freedom Road route crosses the Western part and is dedicated to famous battles and military history of the territory from the 13th century to the establishment of the Republic of Latvia.
7. The Livs Road route reveals the history of one of the world’s smallest ethnic minorities – the Livs with their unique cultural identity and language.
