This territory is to the North of Skrunda, and it is an important location for water birds during their migration. Northern swans nest in the ponds, and sea eagles and other birds such as falcons and plovers use them for feeding. This is a good place for bird-watching, although it has not been particularly structured for that purpose. |

Redzamas pa lielu gabalu Vecumnieku – Skaistkalnes un Stelpes ceļu krustojuma tuvumā. Šīs Holdandes tipa vējdzirnavas uzcēla 1903. gadā. Sākot ar 20. gs. 30. gadiem dzirnavas darbojas ar elektrības palīdzību. Līdz mūsdienām ir saglabājušies vējdzirnavu vēsturiskie mehānismi. Kādreiz daudzie vējdzirnavu stāvi bija raksturīga Zemgales vēsturiskajam novadam, ko pamatoti dēvē par Latvijas „maizes klēti”. Diemžēl līdz mūsdienām ir saglabājušies tikai daži. This is the ancient shore of the Baltic Ice Lake. We can only imagine the landscape 10,000 years ago, when the Kurzeme peninsula was covered with vegetation reminiscent of a tundra, and waves from the icy lake dashed against the ancient shoreline. We know that the lake was full of icebergs of various sizes. Today the cliff is more than 20 km long (some 9 km of it are in the Slītere National Park), and it is as much as 42 m high. It is the most impressive cliff of its type in all of Latvia. At the foot of the cliff are the Irve flatlands (the name comes from the Liv 'īrva' or 'īra', both of which refer to deer). The flatlands are the former bottom of the Baltic Ice Lake. The Blue Hills are crossed by many small streams and rivers (Pitragupe, Lorumupe, Kaļķupe, Mazupe, etc.). Their valleys are the basis for a branched and very complicated system of waterways which look particularly impressive when the trees are bare. In many places the cliffs and valleys display small areas of sandstone from the Narva suite. These are Latvia's oldest sediment cliffs that can be seen above ground. Although the Blue Hills are very impressive in scope, there are only a few places where there are important viewing areas (a viewing tower at the Dundaga-Mazirbe road, the view from the Šlītere lighthouse, the view from Mežlīdumi). The mightiness of the ancient shoreline can truly be enjoyed from the Cirste-Mazirbe road, the Cirste-Riepaldi road, Mežlīdumi and the Vīdala-Melnsils road). It is worth visiting the area in the springtime, when the slopes of the Blue Hills seem to be sinking under the fresh greenery. |

Duke Jacob of Courland was a ruler of the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale for 40 years (1642-1682). There were great changes during his rule, with the ship building industry developing rapidly, the first factories appearing, and agricultural output improving. The duke had a large fleet that brought grain, meat, butter, wool, timber and all that was manufactured at baronial estates in Zemgale and Courland to Western Europe. The fleet was so big and strong that its ships sailed not just to Europe, but also all the way to Tobago and Gambia, where colonies were established to bring sugar, coffee and spices to Europe. The duchy built ships, manufactured paper and saltpetre and wove textiles, brocade and tapestries. Iron manufacturing was highly developed, and ore was imported from Sweden. This made it possible to forge nails, anchors, bells, cannons and other firearms. The duchy produced vodka, vinegar and gunpowder for which there was great demand in Europe, because there were attacks and defences that required it. As much as 25 tonnes of gunpowder were produced each year. One of the gunpowder towers is still in Kandava, though it has been rebuilt many times. The duchy manufactured sails and ropes, as well as hemp ropes. It was said that the fleet of the Queen of England would not have existed without those ropes. The duke also thought about selection of grain, bred livestock, improved land with land reclamation and tried to expand output from his fields. Jacob did not manage to do everything that he wanted to do. A canal to avoid the Venta rapids was not finished, and plans such as the colonisation of Australia were not finished. Yet the era of Duke Jacob was a period of great change in the territory of Latvia, and it has not gone unnoticed that the great achievements of the duke occurred on a small plot of European land. That proves that wise management can ensure lots of progress. |
