The Swedish army built a modern fortress during the 1640s with five bastions and two gates.  There were 120 cannons and mortar throwers, barracks for soldiers, flats for officers, a garrison church and warehouses for food at munitions.  After the Great Northern War in 1710, the fortress was taken over by the Russian army.  After the Soviet occupation in 1940, the Soviet navy took over the fortress.  Alongside it is a former Soviet army facility with abandoned buildings and a monument to sailors who served in submarines.  The fortress is open for tours on Saturdays and Sundays.

The tower on the eastern shore of Lake Engure (next to the meadow for wild cattle, accessible from the side of Bērzciems) offers a view of the reeds, small islands, Great Island, cows and horses of the north-eastern part of the lake. The ancient Dviete river valley information centre “Gulbji” is one of the most important information facilities in the nature park and is housed in a single family farm that is 100 years old and is typical of the historical region of Selonia. Visitors can study an exhibition that is dedicated to the park, buy products from local craftspeople and farmers, and enjoy a beverage that is made from the distillation of beaver glands. To the North and East of “Gulbji” is the Putnu island paddock (250 ha) with livestock adapted to life in the wild – Konik horses and Highlander cows. There’s a bird watching tower on the shore of Lake Skuķi, which is 500 m away.
