In 1951, when it died, the pine tree had a circumference of 4.63 metres. It was the thickest pine tree in the Baltic States
This is one of the few trees with such a long history for which age has been determined by counting up circles – 370 years. All that’s left is a conserved part of the stump at the side of the road. Cross-sections of the stump are on exhibit at the Latvian Museum of Nature and the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum.

The Brasla River flows through a lovely valley that is approximately 300 m wide and up to 30 m deep. It is near the Inčukalns-Valka highway. The river has among the most beautiful rapids in the country, with mighty cliffs (the Brasla cliffs) that can be seen at nearly every curve in the river (except along the lowest reaches of the river). During the winter, various unusual frozen waterfalls can be seen in some of the cliffs, including the Krauļukalns cliff and the Jāņavārti cliff. On the left bank of the Brasla, opposite the Brasla fish farm, there are the Aņīte cliffs -- a series of sandstone cliffs that are 1 km long. The cliffs are between 2 and 35 m in height, and the sandstone cliffs are separated by ravines. On the right bank of the Brasla, there are major cliffs such as the Vāršavu cliff, the Kraukļukalns cliff, the Jāņavārti cliff, the Slūnu cliff, the Virtaka cliff and the Buļi cliff. How can you best learn about them? Boat down the river from the aforementioned highway or even from Straupe, which is further upstream. An alternative is hiking down the right bank of the river, though please take into account that the terrain is fairly extreme, and you are going to have to think about what to do when you arrive at the place where the Brasla River flows into the Gauja. |

The restaurant has a summer terrace with beautiful sunsets. The Rauna cheese factory is owned by Ceriņš family, and for the past 10 years it has offered high-quality and nutritious products to its consumers – cheese, butter and macaroni. The most popular product is “Green cheese,” in which one of the main ingredients, fenugreek, grows in the factory’s garden. Fenugreek is a perennial with five leaves and blue flowers. While the new shoots are soft, they are dried in a wood-fired drying house. Then the fenugreek is ground up, sieved and added to a mass of protein that is put in thin layers in special wooden boxes and allowed to dry. After the fenugreek is added, the cheese gets its typical taste, colour and smell. Groups of 10 or more can apply in advance for tours of the factory and learn about how the cheese is made. |

Andris Roze is one of very few kokle makers in Latvia who manufactures the instrument and helps others to do so at master’s classes. Roze also manufactures other traditional musical instruments, demonstrates them, offers consultations about them, collects them and gathers together historical information. He works at the Drabeši Crafts House, where people can learn traditional skills such as weaving, processing of leather, felting, pottery and construction of musical instruments. |

The owners grow shitake mushrooms and offer tours with information about how mushrooms are grown and what their nutritional properties are. Mushrooms can be bought, and consultations are available. The owners also offer other types of biological farm produce, as well as honey. |

The history of Līgatne cannot be separated from the paper factory which was once the only factory of its kind in Latvia. Tours are available in the company of a guide. During the late 19th and early 20th century, the company built homes, a school, a birthing centre, a hospital, a club, a guesthouse and other buildings for its employees, and most of these buildings have survived to this day. There are more than 200 interesting underground passageways which are still used as warehouses for various items, including vegetables. |

This is a stretched-out territory from Valmiera to the Ape Administrative District, and its primary “axis” is the unregulated Gauja River valley with a dense web of old rivers, park-like meadows of oak trees on their banks, and stands of oaks and other broadleaf trees. Many rare and protected birds, including corn-crakes, woodpeckers, wood grouses and others live and breed here. This is also one of the most important places in Latvia in terms of where the deciduous tree hermit beetle lives.
