The mansion of the Gārsene Estate is built in the Neo-Gothic style, and its design was based on a villa in Germany. The building was erected between 1856 and 1860, and from then until 1920, the baronial dynasty of the Budbergs and Beningshausens owned it. The castle was expanded with another wing in 1885. Between 1939 and 1940, the building was rebuilt to become a school, and President Kārlis Ulmanis attended its opening on June 2, 1940, when he was taking his last official trip as the country’s president. There are other buildings and a park on the estate. The mansion today is home to the Gārsene Elementary School, but there is also an exhibition featuring the baronial dynasty, the history of the school, and the town itself. Just wait until you see the pot-bellied stoves! Outside the mansion are the Gārsene nature trails – the cultural and historical trail, the baronial strolling trail, etc. Before setting off, buy a ticket at the mansion. In front of the mansion is a memorial stone to Professor Pēteris Kulitāns (1878-1951), who was an agro-chemist. |

The tour from Riga to Tallinn combines natural and cultural heritage and includes lovely landscapes and 15 nature trails which cross marshlands, meadows and forests along the shores of the Baltic Sea, including several protected nature reserves. A boardwalk leads through reeds to a viewing platform with views over the meadow and the sea. Saaremaa island is interesting with very different natural attractions to the mainland - dolomite cliffs, juniper heaths, a meteorite lake and rocky sea shore. The tour passes rural farms and traditional villages typical of the coastal areas. Hiiumaa island is a laid back place and retains a very Estonian atmosphere with an important bird reserve at Kaina Bay, unusual Saare Tirp as well as several small islets off its south-eastern coast. The former Maritime School (1894-1914) trained more than 1,000 students.
During Soviet times, a border guard facility was housed here, and the border guard
tower has been preserved. Along the road to the school are forested shoreline
dunes with small buildings which create an interesting coastal landscape. The road
between the Maritime School and the sea was once known as the Captains’ Road.

Rankas Dairy was established in 1996 and manufactured some 80 dairy processing products, including cheese, cottage cheese, cream, fermented dairy products, desserts, etc. This is one of five companies in Latvia that is allowed to manufacture one of the EU’s guaranteed traditional characteristics product, “Summer Solstice” cheese. The products are available at the “Rīmaļnieks” store that is alongside the dairy. |

The narrow gauge rail line between Alūksne and Gulbene has tracks that are 750 mm wide and was once part of a rail line between Stukmaņi and Valka. Today it is the only passenger train on a narrow gauge railroad in Latvia, offering services every day. The Alūksne station was opened in 1903, and 33 km line with 10 stations and other stop scan be covered in approximately 90 minutes. A festival is held each year -- one that is very popular among fans of small trams. |

A third-generation family company, producing “Gotiņa” sweets since 1959. Located in the centre of Skrīveri, a 2-minute walk away from the train station. Company has a Sweets Workshop where visitors can take a tour, wrap their own candies, learn about their history, taste the products, and purchase natural and fresh sweets. For “Gotiņa” sweets with rye bread and cranberries, they use heated rye breadcrumbs from the Lāči bakery.
