The Gauja National Park, established in 1973, was Latvia’s first national park, and it has a wealth of tradition in environmental protection and tourism. Indeed, the GNP is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Latvia. The main “artery” of the park is the ancient Gauja River valley, which was left behind when Ice Age glaciers receded. The valley is 95 kilometres long, with many tributaries that are also in deep ravines with massive sandstone cliffs from the Devonian period. The deepest part of the river valley is at Sigulda, where it is 85 metres deep. The territory has a great diversity of species – some 900 plant species in all. The Gauja is Latvia’s most popular river for water tourism, and many tourist accommodations are found along its shores. The Gauja National Park is one of the best-appointed protected territories in Latvia in terms of nature trails and tourism routes. Nature trails at Līgatne pass along paddocks of wild animals – the largest and most complete object of its kind in the Baltic States. The park also features cultural monuments of pan-Baltic importance – the Turaida Museum Reserve, the medieval old town of the city of Cēsis with its famous castle ruins and St John’s Church, the lake castle at Āraiši, etc. Visitors centres are found in Sigulda, along the Līgatne nature trails, and at the Zvārte rock. The administration of the GNP is building a new and modern visitors centre in Sigulda.

Historians say that Liv tribes began to settle the territory that is now Latvia in the 10th century. They lived in Northern Kurzeme, at the mouths of the Daugava and Gauja Rivers, and from Ģipka to Oviši, where seaside fishing villages of Liv origin can still be found. Coastal residents have always eaten various sea, river and lake fish dishes, including smoked sole, Baltic herring, cod, bream or eelpout, baked lampreys, salted sprats, Baltic herring and common herring. Fresh and lightly salted Baltic salmon is a delicacy. Whole fish are baked on hot coals, including pike perch, trout, carp, catfish and European perch. Guests can participate in catching and smoking fish and tastings with bits of everything is available on degustations. Rye can be tasted in rye bread and sourdough bread, carrot buns and even pancakes and gingerbread. Barley buns are common in Vidzeme, as are tasty meat and fowl dishes. There will always be a pig's snout with peas or an oven-roasted piglet on New Year's Eve. Taverns serve wild game with lingonberries, mushrooms and other wild tastes. Side dishes include autumn vegetables, pumpkin, beans or grits, as well as sinfully tasty sauces. Enjoy traditional pies, sheet cakes, pretzels, apple cakes and honey bakes during celebrations or every day. You will enjoy desserts made of rye breadcrumbs, cranberries, lingonberries and sweet cream. Popular in Kurzeme are blackberry dumplings, and during summers, there are lots of desserts with fresh berries. Boost your health with aromatic herbal teas and honey, or enjoy some homemade wine or beer. |

The museum is in the Lielvārde Park. It is in the granary of the Lielvārde Estate that was built in the early 19th century. It was later used as a residential building. A veranda was added to it in 1922. The museum has been there since 1970, and it features exhibits about the Latvian national epos “Lāčplēsis” and its author, Andrejs Pumpurs (1841-1902). The museum also features information about the history and ethnography of the Lielvārde Administrative District. Alongside it is a large rock that weighs around 80 tonnes and is known as Lāčplēsis’ Bed. A broken part of the rock is known as the Lāčplēsis blanket. Both rocks were once on the banks of the Daugava River next to the Lielvārde island. Waters from the Ķegums hydroelectric power plant now make waves in that area. Nearby is the so-called Spīdala log that was brought from Aizkraukle.

Fruit and berry wine has been made at the Tori Jõesuu Cider and Wine Farm since its beginnings. The people currently living there are inspired by the experiences of their ancestors and value the fruits and berries that grow from the local Soomaa soil, which has a particular composition. The old feral apple tree, which grows in the yard, is particularly special because its golden apples have an unusual taste which makes the Tori Jõesuu Cider Farm cider unique. The visit also includes a tour of a genuine Nordic vineyard. The Cider tour around Tori Jõesuu Cider and Wine Farm on the edge of Soomaa has been awarded the EHE (Genuine and Interesting Estonia) quality label. The farm introduces guests to the secrets of good cider and wine making, the special features of the cultivation of northern grapes, as well as offers catering and organises tastings. |

One of the rare places (see also Rucavas ivju audze) in Latvia where two rare and protected wild tree species grow - yew-tree and Baltic ivy. Territory is not marked on site with information signs or stands therefore it is hard for visitors to find. Not usable as tourism object.

The Green Dune is beyond the Krāči hills (Krāckalni)
and is the second most distinct dune formation in the
national park. It runs for more than three kilometres,
separating the Raganu and Zaļais swamps. An old
earthen road is at the foot of the dune, and that’s the
basis for the route.

The tour starts at Jaunmokas Castle estate, where you will also find the Forest Museum. The pride of the castle is its unique painted tile stove (beginning of the 20th century) made of 130 painted tiles featuring 50 different views of the cities Rīga and Jūrmala. The Forest Trails runs along smaller tracks through the Austrumkursa Uplands, the valley of the river Slocene, along Lake Sekļa and Lake Jumprava to finally reach the town of Tukums. Well, the town takes pride in its pots, planters and flower beds with blooming roses along its streets. Next, the route meanders through forests to the demanding hillock of Milzkalns and Lake Valguma, where you will find the barefoot trail and a secluded art space within the woods. The Forest Trail continues to make a stopover at the Ķemeri National Park. The park is dedicated to protection of wetlands, since it is home to one of the largest marshlands of Latvia – the Great Ķemeri bog. As to the town – Ķemeri – it is the former balneological and sulphur springs resort. The tour ends in the village of Bigauņciems, where the Forest Trail joins with the Baltic Coastal Hiking Route (E9 European long distance path). Optionally, one can take a detour along the Lake Sloka trail with its bird-watching tower or pay a visit to the “Forest House” – the visitor’s centre of the Ķemeri National Park. |

You can go fishing on Lake Usma and then the lady of the house will cook tasty fish soup and smoked fish from what you catch. You can rent a boat, take part in fishing and casting of nets (in the winter, too), or take a cutter trip on the lake. You can also taste canned smoked bream and go horseback riding. |

The most populated place in The Curonian Spit - old curonian village - Nida. Until 19th century Nida's citizens were mainly fishermen. Later it became a popular resort. Like other villages here Nida has been "moved" because of "wandering dunes". There are a lot of museums to see. During tourism season there is around ~ 200 000 – 300 000 tourists here.
