Interestingly, a bear once wandered onto the base, was captured, and was kept in a cage until the military departed.
The Soviet Border Guard appeared at Ragaciems in the mid-1960s and abandoned the location in 1991. There were some 50 military personnel at the facility. Residents of the village got along very well with them, taking part in different celebrations and ensuring normal relations. The only thing that upset the people of Ragaciems was a radar on base which some people thought caused various problems. Interestingly, a bear once wandered onto the base, was captured, and was kept in a cage until the military departed. In 1991, the missiles were dismantled and taken off in an unknown direction.
