Seda - Seda Swamp - Strenci

Practical information

Total distance walking 24 km

Recommended season:  June to August.  Photographers and bird watchers can visit the route in the latter half of April, in May, and in late September and early October.
Length:  ~22 km.  Duration:  1 (strong walkers) to two days, spending the night at the Ķempēni farm (+6 km)
Level of difficulty:  Medium (the swamp)
Road cover:  Paved roads in Seda and Strenči, gravel or peat moss roads, forest trails, the berm of a narrow-gauge railroad

Markings:  The Seda Swam nature trail is marked from Seda to the NW part of the swamp.
Route:  School Square (central Seda)-Zaļā Street-Stacijas Street-Seda Swamp-Jērcēni-great stone of Jērcēni-Sūnuciems-Strenči
Distance from Rīga:  Start – 150 km, end – 145 km
Logistics:  A liner route, with regular bus traffic between Valmiera, Strenči, Seda and Valka
Alternatives:  If you only want to hike down the Seda Swamp nature trail, then there are three lengths – circular routes of 12, 4 and 8 km.
Note:  Wear appropriate shoes and bring along a map, as well as, preferably, navigation equipment.  On the rail berm, please remember that the tracks are still being used by peat wagons.  There are accommodations and dining facilities in Strenči and shops in Seda, Strenči and Jērcēni.
Points of interest:  The Seda Cultural Centre, Seda High School, Seda Central Square with radial streets around it, Seda Orthodox Church and Seda Swamp landscapes and viewing towers, the great oak tree of Kaņepes, Jērcēnmuiža, the Ķempēni farm, the great stone of Jērcēni, the Strenči Lutheran Church.
