The Gauja National Park: Sigulda-Ligatne

Recommended season:  May-October, with particularly lovely views when leaves change their colours in the autumn and when the bird cherry tree is in bloom.
Length:  ~30 km (including nature trails in Līgatne). 
Level of difficulty:  Medium and hard, particularly where the river valleys are deep
Road cover:  Mostly forest roads, gravel roads, pathways, paved roads in Sigulda and Līgatne
Start:  Līgatne Tourism Information Centre
Markings:  Blue rhomboids on a white background and blue signs on trees.  A bike route is marked out from Gaujas Street to the bridge across the Gauja River in Sigulda.
Route:  Sigulda Station Square-Raiņa Street-Pils Street-Līvkalna Street-Paradīzes Street-Vējupīte river valley-Gančauska-Līgatne nature trails-Gaujas Street-Dārza Street-Spriņģu Street-Līgatne Tourism Information Centre.
Distance from Rīga:  Start – 53 km, end – 70 km
Logistics:  There is bus transport from Līgatne to Augšlīgatne (check the schedules in advance!), where there are train services along the Rīga-Ventspils line (at Līgatne) and buses to Rīga, Cēsis and other towns.  Sigulda can be accessed by train 5-9 times a day and by bus.
Alternatives:  Hikers can spend the night in Līgatne and then set off for Cēsis (Route 7).  Spend at least a day or two along the local routes of Sigulda, Turaida and Krimulda (6-5 km).
Note:  Wear appropriate shoes and bring along a map, as well as, preferably, navigation equipment.  Steep cliffs and wooden structures can be slippery.  If you plan to hike the route in one day, think about your capabilities.  Part of the route passed along the Nurmiži Valley nature reserve, and please respect posted instructions!  There are no dining facilities or stores between Sigulda and Līgatne.  You can spend the night at accommodations for water tourists.
Points of interest:  Sigulda train station and Sigulda, Paradīze hill, Vējupīte River valley, Elpju cliff, Launagiezis cliff, Gūdu cliffs and Līgatne nature trails, Jumpraviezis cliff and the Līgatne Paper Factory village.
