Nature trails around Līgatne(Latvia, 1 day)The route: A nature trail with wild animals of 5.5 km, the Gaujmala trail of 2 km, the untouched nature trail of 1.3 km. Duration: 3-6 hours Distance from Rīga: The Visitors Centre in Līgatne where the paths start and end is approximately 75 km from the capital city. Best time to visit: April-October Path cover: Forest path, footbridges, earthen paths, asphalted areas Getting there: Take the Rīga-Līgatne bus or the Rīga-Cēsis-Valmiera-Lugaži train (to the Līgatne station). Then take a bus or walk to Gaujasmala. If you are driving, take the Vidzeme highway (E77, A2) to Augšlīgatne, turn toward Līgatne, continue town Dārza iela until you see the sign "Līgatnes dabas takas". Go on from there. A brief description of the routeThe nature trails of Līgatne are in the territory of the Gauja National Park. They are the only place in Latvia where wild animals can be viewed in areas which are as close as possible to their natural environment. There are three nature footpaths which are around 9 km in total length, and there is also a 5.1 km route for automobiles. The banks of the Gauja river can be viewed from a bicycle or from horseback. Very different views are seen from a canoe. The Cepurīšu hill viewing tower provides a beautiful view of the ancient Gauja valley. |
Points of interestThe nature trail follows the banks of the Gauja river valley, and you can spot forest animals such as deer, bucks, foxes, lynxes, bears, racoons, rabbits, as well as Europe’s largest mammal - the aurochs, which arrived in Latvia comparatively recently.The Gaujmala trail is a circular pathway which allows the visitor to view the shores of the Gauja river, as well as the plants that grow in the area. One of the most impressive sandstone cliffs in the region is the Gūdu cliff on the opposite side of the Gauja. The Untouched nature trail takes the visitor to a small but most unique sandstone canyon - the Paparžu glen.
