Cēsis - Valmiera(Latvia, 1 day)The route: 42 km Distance from Rīga: 87 km to the starting point at Cēsis, 107 km to the finishing point at Valmiera Best time to visit: May-October Road cover: Mostly gravel, as well as forest roads and unpaved paths. Asphalt at the start. Getting there: The Rīga-Cēsis-Valmiera-Lugaži train (to Cēsis), the Rīga-Cēsis or Rīga-Valmiera bus (to Cēsis). If driving, take the Vidzeme highway (A2, E77) to the Cēsis turnoff and then to Cēsis. |
A brief description of the routeThe bicycle route from Cēsis to Valmiera is in the Gauja National Park. Established in 2003, it runs mostly along the right bank of the Gauja river valley, covering fantastic landscapes and points of interest in the Valmiera and Cēsis districts. The route includes 11 different tourism objects, and it is well marked all along its distance.Points of interestAt Cēsis: Union Square, the old town, the Cēsis castle, the castle park, St. John’s Lutheran Church, a place where ancient jewellery is made, ice age nature trailsThe Ērģeļu (Ērgļu) cliffs: This is the mightiest monolith sandstone cliff ensemble in Latvia, 0.7 km long and up to 22 m high. Jāņarāmis: There was a river crossing place here in the 18th century, and now there are two bridges alongside one another. The Krēslinieki museum: The owners of the "Lejasbrežģi" homestead have set up a museum to feature the talents of chair-makers. Ceramics are on sale. Sietiņiezis: This is the most impressive white sandstone cliff in Latvia. A path is there for travellers.
