Hólar in Hjaltadalur in Northern Iceland was established in 1106 as a bishopric and school. Since then Hólar has been a centre of scholarly and cultural activities. Today Hólar University College has a focus on three main aspects: Aquaculture and fish biology, Equine science, and Rural tourism. These are all related to growing industries in Iceland and abroad, particularly in rural areas. Hólar University College emphasises research and development work and there is a close relationship with the respective industries.
The primary aim of the Rural tourims program is to provide education for active participants in the development of rural tourism, entrepreneurs in small tourism enterprises and administrators for rural tourism. Emphasis is placed on tourism based on local culture and natural environment and the program focuses on principles of sustainable development.
Education at Holar University College is aimed at strengthening regional development in Iceland and supporting sustainable social development in all parts of Iceland.
