June 23 is a day when all the country celebrates midsummer - the summer solstice. We call this celebration "Līgo", after refrain of the special folk songs we still sing on this night since early times, or "Jāņi", after Jānis - one of the deities in Latvian mythology and also one of the most popular names in Latvia which is an equivalent to John, Johan, Janus, Ivan, etc. What is the celebration about? It is a public festivity with lots of singing, dancing, oak and flower wreaths on everyone’s heads, bonfires, beer and special caraway cheese. No sleeping on this night - everybody is supposed to stay awake for the sunrise to celebrate the sun. There are many traditions and believes related to the midsummer night. If you want to experience some of it - spend the night in the Latvian countryside! Special offerInformation & booking - tel. +371 7617600, e-mail: lauku@celotajs.lv |
