Heritage gardens

These are gardens, botanical gardens and plant collections open to visitors and showing horticulture and gardening traditions, historical varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs, ornamental trees, bushes and flowers. In specialized gardens visitors may also learn about historical cultivars, their use, and achievements of local plant breeders. Historical gardens reflect influences from different historical periods and cultures. They are often located near estates, museums or homesteads and form a part of their history.

What can we find in historical gardens?

  • Estate gardens were usually established by the early 20th century, and they have old species of plants, as well as, in some cases, historical planning.  Many estates have parks or orchards where unusual species of plants can be seen.
  • Farms often have historical types of roses and lilacs, as well as ancient perennial plants such as phloxes and peonies.
  • The gardens and museums which feature fruit production usually have a wide range of types, with stories about selectors, the history of the garden and special types of fruit.
