On September 18th & 19th, in Riga, 10 Latvian and Estonian tourism organizations met together and started work on a new project - Forest and Coastal Hiking Trails' accessibility improvement for different social groups. The accessibility of hiking trails will be focused on 5 target groups - 1) people with functional impairments (movement, vision, hearing); 2) for seniors; 3) for families with small children, i.e. strollers; 4) for school-aged children; 5) for people with a language or cultural barrier. Trail accessibility will be improved in separate phases.
The project will be implemented over 3 years - from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026. The leading partner of the project is the Latvian Rural Tourism Association "Lauku Celotajs".

Aufgrund des steigenden Interesses in der Bevölkerung an einem gesunden und natürlichen Lebenswandel ist ein neues Tourismuskonzept entstanden, das es Stadtbewohnern erlaubt, für eine Weile in das Leben auf dem Land „einzutauchen“ und vielleicht dadurch eine Veränderung des eigenen Lebenswandels herbeizuführen oder einfach nur ein paar Tage auf dem Land zu erleben. Es dreht sich dabei alles um den ländlichen Lebensstil und eine Veränderung der Sichtweise auf das Leben auf dem Land, wo traditionelle und moderne Werte aufeinandertreffen.

Die Baltischen Wanderwege sind da – voll ausgestattet mit Wegmarkierungen, Karten, Reiseführern und einer eigenen Webseite bieten sie Wanderern unvergessliche Naturerlebnisse in Estland, Lettland und Litauen.

Der Ostseeküstenwanderweg und der Waldwanderweg sind zwei Fernwanderwege im Baltikum. Zusammen als die Baltischen Wanderwege bezeichnet laden sie Wanderer aus aller Welt nach Estland, Lettland und Litauen ein und sind ein Teil des europäischen Netzwerks der Fernwanderwege. Bei der Ausarbeitung der Wanderwege wurde besonderes Augenmerk darauf gelegt, die Wege in ihrer gesamten Länge zu erschließen. Dazu wurden die Ortschaften auf dem Weg bei der Suche nach der optimalen Route, der Versorgung von Gästen, der Markierung der Wege sowie der Erstellung von Reiseführern und Karten aktiv eingebunden. Beim Wandern im Baltikum können sie sowohl die vielfältige Natur als auch wahre Gastfreundschaft genießen.

Hier finden Sie 18 Wandertouren für einen und mehrere Tage (bis zu 11 Tage) in Lettland und Estland, die Teil des Fernwanderwegs des Baltischen Waldes sind (in Lettland - Mežtaka, in Estland - Metsa matkarada) (E11) interessanteste, landschaftlich reizvollste Waldgebiete beider Länder, die für ihre natürlichen und kulturellen Objekte bekannt sind. Mehrere Touren umfassen Nationalparks, Naturparks und Biosphärenreservate sowie UNESCO-Welterbestätten.

Jede Tour enthält eine schematische Tourenkarte, Informationen über den innerhalb eines Tages zurückzulegenden Kilometerstand, den Schwierigkeitsgrad, die herausragendsten Sehenswürdigkeiten sowie praktische Informationen über die Straßenoberfläche, den Weg zum Startpunkt und die Rückkehr vom Ziel zurück in die Stadt.

Die Touren werden sowohl für Einzelreisende als auch für kleine Touristengruppen angeboten. Es wird empfohlen, den Transport (ein Auto zu mieten oder öffentliche Verkehrsmittel zu nutzen), Unterkunft und Verpflegung im Voraus zu buchen und bei Bedarf einen persönlichen Transfer und einen Gepäcktransfer zu arrangieren.

Die in der Broschüre enthaltenen Touren können je nach Wunsch der Reisenden verkürzt oder verlängert werden. Diese oder einige dieser Wandertouren können auch in die traditionellen Tourismusrouten und Stadtrundfahrten einbezogen werden, um das Angebot zu diversifizieren.

The project "A model for sustainable tourism in Central Asia: Building capacities, creating awareness, introducing technology" (MOST) team has created an introduction video for this project. It gives an insight of what is planned as well as for whom the project is meant for.

EU-funded SWITCH-Asia Programme Project MOST aims to support tourism MSMEs and associations as well as local and regional authorities in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan towards a new model of sustainable tourism based on the sustainable production and consumption patterns. This will be achieved through the provision of a life cycle and supply chain management approach to sustainability interventions in tourism, covering issues that range from support for regional policies & planning, adoption of standards, introduction of value chain concepts, to the awareness of relevant stakeholders, highlighting in this way the multi-stakeholder nature of tourism sustainability and the great benefits that will arise through the engagement and cooperation of all stakeholders.

Baltic Coastal Hiking is a long distance hiking route part of E9 along the coast of the Baltic Sea. The hiking route starts at the Lithuanian-Latvian border in the village of Nida in Latvia and finishes at the Port of Tallinn in Estonia. The total length of the route is 1200 km, of which 580 km are in Latvia, and 620 km in Estonia; the route can be taken in both directions and Tallinn can also be a starting point. The route is divided into days and difficulty levels, which allows you to choose the most suitable distance for yourself. “Mazsālijas” is a guest house on an organic farm. The farm breeds fallow deer and trout, grows vegetables and fruit, makes wine. The hostess offers a 4 hour food workshop for small groups of visitors to cook a meal together in a friendly atmosphere. During the food workshop visitors will learn how to cook a meal on a firewood stove from the home produce – vegetables, trout, and fallow deer meet. The food workshop includes cooking a three-course meal: a starter (fallow deer tartar, salted trout), the main course: trout fried on butter with steamed vegetables, fallow deer meet with rosemary and potato gratin, a dessert: cream cheese with strawberry sorbet.

“Puzurs” is a traditional Latvian room decoration for Christmas. It is made from straw, and its’ light, airy form and precise geometry is fascinating. This decoration really brings festive feeling.
The crafts house also offers workshops in gingerbread baking and making traditional Christmas to help everyone get prepared for Christmas celebrations.

On December 21, Valmiermuiža will gather local producers from all around Latvia, offering homemade bread, cheese, smoked goods, lamprey, honey, herbal teas, spices, homemade wine, beer, juice, candied fruit, hard candy, gingerbread cookies and lots more.

Everything offered at the fair is natural and, hence, healthy, made by locally grown plants or gathered in the clean forests and meadows of Latvia. Local craftsmen will offer woollen socks, mittens, crochets, hammered work, wooden toys and jewellery to give them as presents to friends and relatives. Items made by local craftsmen would make our ancestors proud, as they have been made according to the best traditions.

Along the fair all visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy a varied culture programme, including activities to get better acquainted with the traditions of the annual customs, learn songs and games, master some of the traditional crafts and much more.

According to an old Latvian belief, nine dishes should be served for the festive Christmas meal. The hostess at “Vīnkalni” country house will teach visitors how to cook three Latvian traditional dishes:

‘Biguzis’ – a traditional country dessert with rye bread, whipped cream and fresh berries. Its ingredients are rye bread, cranberries or lingonberries, honey, cinnamon and whipped cream. Mature rye bread is crushed or grated. Cranberries are squeezed in juice, diluted with water, sweetened with honey and poured into bread. When the bread has sucked into the liquid, it is topped with whipped cream.

Fresh cheese – made from cow's milk adding various herbs and spice (cumin, hemp, greens).

Buns and cakes. It is said that in Latvian folk tradition round cakes and buns in the form of a crescent were baked to honour the Sun and the Moon. Today they are often baked for celebrations and festivities. The traditional Latvian buns ‘pīrāgi’ are made from yeast dough, are 5-13cm long in a curved form like a crescent. They are filled with bacon and onions or with cottage cheese or apples.

Der Baltische Küstenwanderweg ist ein Teil des Fernwanderwegs E9 entlang der Ostseeküste, der an der lettisch-litauischer Grenze im Dorf Nida in Lettland beginnt und am Tallinner Hafen in Estland endet. Die ~ 1200 Kilometer des Baltischen Küstenwanderweges sind in 60 einzelne Eintageswanderungen eingeteilt (12 – 25 km). Jede Tageswanderung hat eigene Beschreibung. Zusätzlich sind drei Doppelseiten des Reiseführers den estnischen Inseln gewidmet, deren Besuch als Fortsetzung der Wanderung eingeplant werden kann. Andererseits kann man sich auch einfach der Entspannung hingeben, indem man das kulturgeschichtliche, kulinarische Angebot und die behagliche Atmosphäre der Inseln genießt. Die Reiseführer werden in 5 verschiedenen Sprachen (Englisch, Lettisch, Deutsch, Estnisch und Russisch) veröffentlicht. In begrenzter Anzahl sind englische, lettische sowie deutsche Versionen, in gedruckter Form, in unserem Büro in Riga, Kalnciema Straße 40, erhältlich.

On the way to Latvia’s centenary, we at Baltic Country Holidays have produced a new tour map inviting to travel along 7 routes of Latvia’s Statehood: the Baltic’s Road, the Freedom’s Road, the Mara’s Road, the Liv’s Road, the Daugava’s Road, the Jacob’s Road, the Light’s Road. The routes will allow you to learn about aspects of Latvia’s history, personalities, places and events that facilitated the establishment of the state and the emergence of its national identity.

The publication includes a map with the 7 routes marked and briefly described, 80 attractions along the routes and 85 open farms that hold the sign Latvian Heritage.

The 7 Routes of Latvia’s Statehood have been developed within the programme for celebration of the centenary of Latvia as a state. The key message of the centenary celebration is „I am Latvia” focusing on people as the core value of the state. They shape today’s life in the country and, together with their young generation, they lay foundations for the future.

The map is available at the office of „Lauku ceļotājs”, 40 Kalnciema str. (3rd floor), Riga (week days at 09:00 – 17:00).

Drinking maple and birch saps is old Latvian tradition. Though maple is introduced species, Latvians have discovered that its saps taste as good as birch, and it starts earlier. Usually saps start running with the first warm days when temperatures stay above zero and stop with the first green leaves. This year maple sap has started to run as early as mid February. At Ragāres farm they collect maple saps and bottle it for own use and for visitors willing to enjoy this seasonal treat. Saps are collected by drilling a hole in the trunk some 30-40cm from the ground and using a tube to lead the sap into a container. Maple and birch saps are renowned for their detoxicating and curative properties. People drink it fresh and also fermented.

Authentic ethnographic experiences are guaranteed to tourists in guest houses and open farms that are awarded with the “Latvian Heritage” sign. 19 rural tourism businesses joined the “LH” sign holder community on January 11 this year, on a regular “LH” award ceremony with participation of the Latvian Minister of Culture. Today over 70 keepers of Latvian national traditions in the countryside are prepared to show things, tell stories, offer Latvian foods, teach crafts and skills, and celebrate Latvian traditional festivities with their guests.

Our new cycling map includes 9 cycling routes, 240 tourism objects, how to travel to and around the Baltic States.
This cycling map contains brief descriptions of 9 cycling routes withing the three Baltic States as well as descriptions of 240 tourism objects found along the
cycling routes. There are also marked local cafes and pubs in the map, where we recommend to have a meal. Several routes or their separate sections can be combined
together. The Baltic landscape is gentle rolling hills.None of the featured routes are particularly difficult and most routes are suitable for beginners.

This year Latvia is a partner country of “International Green Week” which takes place from 16-25th January, 2015 in Berlin. Latvia's stand is planned as a rural homestead with demonstrations of produce from gardens, meadows, the Baltic Sea as well as representation of rural tourism. Food tastings, demonstrations, and various activities will take place during the fair. Tourism of Latvia will be representing by Latvian Rural tourism association “Lauku celotajs” and Latvian National airline AirBaltic.

We were glad to read in UK's "Daily Mail" that birch juice is conquering the world as one of the top health drinks. Read here.

Living in the country where there is no shortage of birch trees Latvians has collected and drunk birch sap for centuries. When you drive around Latvia in April, it is a common sight as in the photo here. The hand written signes along the roads that fresh birch sap available for purchase are also common.
