The museum opened in 2007 and displays a 180 mm gun barrel, reconstruction of a Soviet restricted border zone, a civil defence shelter, armoured vehicles, a border guard boat and naval mines. Exhibited in the main building are a maritime surveillance radar in its original position, various military items, “Lenin´s corner” and weapons and barracks rooms. |

In Dagda, on the side of Daugavpils Street, there is a forested hillock that is the Lubāne castle hill. On the upper part of its southern side, there’s a viewing area which offers a view of the small Lake Lubenenis, the eastern part of Dagda, and the white tower of the local Catholic church. Legend has it that treasure is buried here.

This is the most impressive and colourful set of cliffs along the Vidzeme coastline. Waves have created the steep shore that is as much as 6 m high, with several hundred meters of red sandstone cliffs with narrow caves, niches, grottos and other formations. The nearby Veczemu farm is where the Rīga Film Studio shot the films “Long Way into the Dunes” and “The Nest of the Old Fisherman.”

Rikavas Manor is the local architectural monument that belonged to Janovski family. Michael Riks
bought the building in the second half of the 18th century. The construction works of the manor house lasted
from 1870 till 1875. The redbrick building is an example of Neo Gothic style. Since 1926 there was established
a school. You should see the beautiful interior and wooden stairs as well as school’s workshop

The zenith missile base at Rucava is in the forests of the Baltic coastline. The facility is owned by the regional local government and is not used at this time.

Renda is a very old town, first mentioned in historical sources in 1230. During the 13th century, Renda was one of the centres of the ancient Courlandian land of Vanema. When Courland was split up in 1235, Renda was taken over by the German Order, and local residents were forcibly drafted into its military. During the age of the Duchy of Courland (1562-1795), the region flourished despite wars, the bubonic plague and other problems, particularly during the rule of Duke Jacob (1642-1682). During the 17th century, Renda became something of a manufacturing centre, churning out timber products, with local lime kilns, watermills, flax weaving facilities, a glass factory and a boiling house for saltpetre and soap. Wine, perfumes and barrels were produced in Renda, as was cast iron for nails and many other things. The court at the Jelgava Castle loved the sour wines from Renda. All of this was destroyed during the Great Northern War (1700-1721). During the 19th century, a chemicals factory was built on the site of the burned Renda castle, and nearby was one of the largest leather tanning plants in Kurzeme, along with a manufacturing facility for turpentine. Cultural life began to develop in parallel to this. Renda suffered much during the two world wars and the subsequent Soviet repressions. The so-called Courelian Battalion of partisans went into the forests after the occupation to continue their struggle against the Soviet regime. Renda today is a small and quiet village with the Lielrenda Estate, a local church, the “devil’s boat” at the Abava River, and the Īvande waterfalls. |

This is one of the oldest open-air museums in Europe, featuring 118 old buildings from all cultural and historical regions of Latvia. You’ll be able to our farms, craftsmen’s and fishermen’s farms (including Liv ones), and a farm once owned by Russian Old Believers in Latgale. Annual celebrations are held, and educational programmes are available. Craftspeople do their work at the museum, and you can quench your thirst at the Priede saloon. |
