The so-called Comet Fort was built on the Left Bank of the Daugava at its mouth, not far from the present Daugavgrīva lighthouse. It was built around the same time as the other forts of Mangaļsala (around 1808, although some sources say 1788). There were four Kane-type 152-mm cannons. The defensive batteries at Komētforts and Mangaļsala repelled a British naval attack in the Daugava estuary in 1855. It has to be added that Komētforts is a cultural monument of local importance. If we go along the shore of the sea from the Daugavgrīva nature reserve toward the Daugavgrīva lighthouse and scale the frontal dunes (without going past the sign which says “Closed Territory. Border Zone.”), then we can see the positions of the cannons, as well as underground cellars where munitions were once stored. The territory starts approximately 500 metres before the Daugavgrīva lighthouse and stretches to the lighthouse itself. During Soviet times, the territory was closed to civilians, because many secret military objects were in this area and in Bolderāja.

The Dviete Wetlands Nature Park contains a unique natural territory – the ancient Dviete River valley with the Lake Skuķi and the Lake Dviete and the surrounding wetland meadows. During flooding season, these wetlands store up waters from the Daugava River. They absorb a lot of floodwater at first and then slowly return it, thus reducing the level of floods in the Daugava River valley. This process is the reason for the unique ecosystem which exists in this area. It is an important location for plants and birds both during migration and nesting season. The river valley is important for birds during migration and nesting. In 2006, wild cows were released into the meadows. There is also work to improve the tourist infrastructure in the area. |

These are beautiful and impressive views, particularly early in the morning, of the historical locations of Alūksne. Go to Templis Hill, the Aleksandrs Pavilion, the obelisk which commemorates Heinrich von Fittinghoff, and the memorial to soldiers of the No. 7 Sigulda Brigade for good views. The Templis Hill, the castle ruins, the estate and the pavilions are arhitectural monuments.

From Riga the tour goes through historic sea resort Jurmala to Pure Chocolate museum where you could see production and taste some. Then the tour goes to Sabile where there is small Wine Hill which history dates back to 16th century. Next day there are eco wine tasting at Aizpute and Durbe and then go to the city of Liepaja with lovely sandy beach, arty atmosphere and significant military heritage at Karaosta suburb. Then the route follows up the coast line. At Pavilosta you have a trip in traditional fishermen boat and at Alsunga singing and demonstration of local traditions by Suiti women. Culturally colourful community which heritage is listed in UNESCO. Then walk along the steep sea cost at Jurkalne and enjoy the best maintained port town of Ventspils. Next day there is a visit to local fishermen and see fish smoking process, then walk along Cape Kolka where the open sea meets the Riga Bay. Turning back to Riga you have a visit and tasting at wine maker in Talsi. |
