It is worth hiking this road where in crosses the Šlītere Blue Hills. This part of the road is approximately one kilometre long, and it goes down to the valley of the stream which crosses the hills. The place has been given a peculiar name – the Kušperlankgrāvis ravine (or the Zeltiņi ravine, as is claimed in other sources). If you're driving, be careful, because there is no bridge here, just a ford. During the early spring or the winter, you will appreciate the ravines and the impressive Blue Hills themselves. Impressive sandstone cliffs which are several metres high and have been vandalised by human hands are on both sides of the road. There is a small niche in one of the cliffs. To the right (East) from the road at the terrace of the Blue Hills is a side road which leads to the Mežlīdumi homestead. Please be gentle with the cliffs! |

This route passes along one of the most diverse and beautiful parts of the coastline of the Bay of Rīga. You will see the Randu meadows, which are known as Latvia’s open-air “herbarium” because of the diversity of plants that can be found there. The coast features various sizes of rocks and stones, as well as no shortage of lovely and sandy beaches. This is the only place in Latvia where Devonian sandstone cliffs can be seen. Past each horn there is a different landscape, and the last 20 kilometres of the route are paradise for bird watchers during migration season. The route is in the Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve. Due to location and nature conditions, Avinurme area has strong woodcraft and business traditions, which are based on knowledge passed on generatoin to generation. The main products have always been wooden vessels – different household items such as barrels, tubs, casks, wooden buckets, sauna wash tubes, wooden roof chips and furniture, particularly chairs. Wooden Handicrafts Centre you can test your dexterity in the many different workshops offered. Offers and packets to groups. This is also a tourist centre where you can get acquainted with local wood products. There is also a café serving dishes of Peipus region on special wood products, and home-made rye bread is also available here. |

A farm and holiday house in the hilly landscape of Vidzeme, Cēsis 35 km. The hosts produce marmalade sweets from organically certified rye bread and other products, bake rye tin loaves, and make rye gingerbread dough, as well as the bread drink kvass. They also make jewellery and handicrafts. Produce can be purchased. |

Established: 1931. The arboretum was set up at the suggestion of Latvia’s distinguished author Anna Brigadere. After her death and until 1935, the arboretum was supported and expanded by book publisher Jānis Rapa. There are some 180 foreign trees and shrubs of various kinds here. Some of the plants are outside the arboretum itself.
Unique plants: The Bunge’s Ash (Fraxinus chinensis), the Eastern Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), the American Buckeye (Aesculus glabra), the Smoketree (Cotinus coggyria), the White Mulberry (Morus Alba), and the Kentucky Yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea).

There is no need to enter the bog to see it, there are good views from the highway Ventspils – Riga (77 km, bus stop “Pagrieziens uz Elkskeni”). The main value of restricted area is chalky fen bog with brown bog-rush (greatest habitat finding in Latvia). Be careful when stopping on the highway – mind the traffic! A couple of kilometers towards Riga, on the right side of the highway, there is sign to Grizu Velna kresls ( Grizu Devil Chair) which is an attractive boulder (protected).

The Ance Estate was built for Ulrich Johann von Behr by his father as a gift. The estate was once surrounded by an ornate French garden. Beginning in 1766, the building was rebuilt and ornately decorated. Around 1810, French soldiers occupied the mansion and caused much damage to it. For that reason, the second floor was torn down a bit later, and extensive renovations were conducted to adapt the estate into apartments for the manager and his civil servants. In 1920, the estate was taken over by the state. The lady of the house will teach visitors to bake carrot buns and talk about the history of the pastry. The workshop of a craftsmanship group offers a look at the work of craftsmen and a chance to try the crafts yourself. |

This arboretum park is in a lovely place – the Blue Hills of Ogre, where there is a tower with a good view of the Daugava River Valley. The landscape is enlivened by a pond and its streams. There are beautiful hiking trails throughout the park.
Unique species: The Amur Cork Tree (Phellodendron amurense) and the Field Elm (Ulmus minor), among others.

The highest and most beautiful wall of cliffs on Saaremaa Island (up to 21 m high), stretching along some 3 km. During strong winds from the W or NW, a part of the cliff is washed by the waves of the sea. The open face of the cliff has limestone, marls and dolomite, and there is a wealth of fossils at the base of the cliff – corals, stromatoporids, etc.

Autumn is a peak bird migration time when huge flocks frequently cross the sky above your head. Cranes perform impressive displays in the fields. There are still some dragonflies and butterflies to see, plus wild animals including wild boar, deer and beaver. The landscape acquires its beautiful autumn colours while we people can enjoy oursleves gathering the wild autumn harvest - mushrooms, cranberries, cowberries and much more. From Riga the tour goes along the Vidzeme sea coast with areas of Devonian sandstone, coastal meadows and numerous places to watching wading birds. At Salacgriva you visit the traditonal lamprey weirs and can taste them grilled. The tour goes to Seda bog, which is an important nesting site for water birds. Here you might see several types of geese, swans and cranes as well as some mammals and dragonflies. Then the route goes to natural coniferous forests at Mežole with great biological diversity. Next the tour focuses on mushrooms and berries in the Gauja National Park which also provides great views of the river valley with some steep Devonian banks with several medieval castles and manors perched on top. Then the tour goes back to Riga and on to two important national parks. Ķemeri National Park has a Black Alder trail through wet forest, ideal for spotting woodpeckers. In contrast the Big Heath trail passes though a landscape of raised and transit bog and sulphurous springs. At Slītere National Park you have a wildlife day visiting a beaver lodge, tracking variousforestanimals and possibly seeing some of them. Cape Kolka offers excellent costal migration action. The tour goes along the steep sea coast of Jurkalne, stops at Ventspils town for lunch with a bracing walk along its breakwater, then turns inland towards Riga. On the way there are stops at the Abava ancient valley and Sabile wine hill. |
