We strart the tour from Riga by bus and proceed along the Baltic Sea coast, passing through many different landscapes - white sandy beaches, coastal meadows, dunes with pine forests and steep banks. Many beaches are wild and completely deserted. Access to these territories were highly restricted during Soviet times. The route leads through ethnographic fishermen villages at Nida, passing Pape nature reserve where wild horses graze. The bustling city of Liepaja impreses with its lively promanade and music scene. The city also has a long military history which can cleary be seen walking among the naval fortifications and visiting the former millitary town. Well-maintained Ventspils has a pleasant market, castle and numerous parks. A restored narrow-gauge railway with working steam engine is well worth a visit as well as the Craft House - ideal for local handmade souvenirs. On the way back the tour goes through the pretty provincial town of Kuldiga with well- preserved wooden architecture. The tour includes two of the most interesting national parks: Slitere which holds the geological history of former ages and Kemeri with its great heath trail and sulphur springs. |

This is an ancient and important place for trade and craftsmanship on the left shore of the Rīga hydroelectric power plant reservoir. It rises some 15 m above the Daugava River. The Zemgale port that is described in historical documents is thought to have been located alongside the castle hill and at the mouth of the little Varžupīte stream. Antiquities that have been dug up here suggest that the castle hill and its adjoining ancient settlement were populated until the late 12th century, when the importance of Daugmale began to shrink because of rapidly growing Rīga. The foundations of the castle hill have been shored up. |

This used to be the location of the Roja or Lubezere maritime school, and the home for teachers is still there. A private medical practice is in the building right now. The maritime school existed from 1873 to 1915 and was wrecked during World War I. The school trained helmsmen for short-distance trips. Tuition was free, and classes were taught in Latvian. Latvian sailors were known in Russia and abroad, including the Americas. They were respected for their serious approach to their work, their honesty and their loyalty. (Source: Roja TIC) |

The office of photographer Mārtiņš Buclers was recently found at the Sauka Unity House where the Sauka trade school was located. In 2010, the exhibition was moved to the Sauka Parish Council in Lone. Mārtiņš Buclers (1866-1944) was a founding father of photography in Latvia. He established the first company in the country which produced photo film and paper. The exhibits are of particular interest now that we are in the digital photo era. The Sauka Unity House is closed and can only be viewed from the outside, but alongside it is a memorial stone dedicated to Buclers, as well as a monument commemorating the 150th anniversary of photography. |

"Valgums" is a word referring to the sandy coastline zone between dunes and water, and once there were boats and nets that were being dried at this location. Each village had several areas of this type, and in the 1920s and 1930s, these were of great importance in the preservation of the Liv language. |
