The tour introduces modern day life in rural Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania and includes visits to small farms raising livestock and producing delicious foods, and to ethnographic villages preserving the traditional lifestyle in a contemporary environment. The tour also involves sites of historical and cultural interest. The tour gives a look beyond the usual tourism sites to get to know the three Baltic states more deeply. It starts in the historic Latvian capital, Riga, followed by the Gauja National Park with its castles, manors and walking trails. Climb the tower of medieval Turaida Castle for amazing views over the valley and visit the ancient jewellery master in the castle of the charming town of Cesis. Across the border in Estonia, walk streets with elegant villas at Parnu sea resort before catching a ferry to Saaremma island. Ethnographic Koguva village, ancient churches and windmills are typical of the island, as is an embroidering tradition. Then it's off to Tallinn with its medieval Old Town and to the rocky landscapes of Lahemaa National Park with fishing villages and manors. Try Estonian national dishes at the pub in Altja. Driving back, stop at the university town of Tartu. In Latvia again, visit goat farms and a traditional black bread bakery. Then the tour heads towards the west coast with the cities of Liepaja and, across the border in Lithunaia, Klaipeda. Next is the incredible Curonian Spit. Before Vilnius, take a detour to Grutas Park with its bizarre Soviet statuary. Finish the journey at picturesque Trakai Castle in Lithuania and Rundale Palace in Latvia. |

Jaunciems has always been a small village, and only a few homes are populated today. Nearby there are leisure locations on the right bank of the Irbe River. Jaunciems is linked to Sīkrags by the former tracks of the narrow-gauge train. There is also a bridge for hikers and bicyclists. |

The Gauja is the most beautiful river in Latvia, with an impressive river valley that is up to 80 metres in depth. Picturesque sandstone outcrops rise above the river. The Gauja is a calm river, with just a few small rapids. Leisure boating is perfect here. Between Cesis and Sigulda, the Gauja flows through the Gauja National Park . There are several well-appointed facilities for boaters on the banks of the river, with benches, tables, places for campfires, firewood and information stands.Several interesting heritage sites on the way - Ligatne Oldfashioned ferry, Turaida medieval castle and Krimulda Manor. |

The museum has more than 120,000 objects which focus on the history of Liepāja and Southern Kurzeme from the Stone Age to the 19th century. Another exhibition is focused on the life and work of the wood sculptor Miķelis Pankoks (1894-1983). New art exhibitions are periodically staged at the museum. |

The Vijciems Hunting Castle building houses an elegant design guest house Bergervilla. Each room has an individually designed design, historic furniture and a special atmosphere. There are 4 rooms available - a standard room, a two-room suite and two deluxe rooms with a private balcony and a bathtub. Latvia’s highest hill is the second highest in the Baltic States, but alas, it has only a wrecked viewing tower, so you’ll have to look for the best views on your own. You’ll find some around the tower and the ski trails, particularly Large and Small Golgotha. It is worth hiking the Gaiziņkalns nature trail.

The Jēkabpils Museum of History offers an educational programme, “The Story of Cheese,” which provides information about the ancient history of cheese, interesting aspects of cheese making and the cheese-related traditions of the former owners of the Krustpils castle, the von Korf dynasty of noblemen. Tours are available for groups of 10 or more people. |

The Ziemupe nature restricted territory is on the shore of the Baltic Sea, and it protects a wide variety of coastline biotopes. The distinguished grey dunes are found here, as are various kinds of forest biotopes, some of them quite rare in Latvia. There are many protected plants and animals in the area, too. The Akmensrags lighthouse and several tourist accommodations, like camping Laikas who "Sējējs" award, are in the territory. On the sea shore not far from center of Ziemupe there is well-appointed parking area with information stands. |

The saloon is in the former home of the governor of the Koknese Estate. It is named after the Latvian author Rūdolfs Blaumanis, who studied at the estate and lived there for two years. There is an outdoor terrace, and it is possible to hold celebrations there. Latvian cuisine: Potato salad, herring salad, bean salad Valmiera salad, beef with onions, pork ribs, homemade steak haché, roast beef with horseradish sauce, baked liver, herring with cottage cheese, oatmeal dessert. Special foods: “Saloonkeeper’s slice”. |

A memorial room to Pauls Stradiņš is found at Raiņa Street 14 in Viesīte. A memorial plaque on the green wooden house tells us that the distinguished Latvian surgeon, academician and professor Pauls Stradiņš (1896-1958) lived there from 1902 until 1914. The exhibits relate to Stradiņš and his family. Right now the room is closed to visitors, and it is planned that during the tourism season of 2013, its contents will be displayed at the former Viesīte school at Peldu Street 2.

This territory covers the shoreline between the Ventspils-Liepāja highway and the Baltic Sea on both sides of the Užava River. The territory was established to protect shoreline biotopes such as the grey dunes, as well as a number of endangered plants. To the South of the mouth of the Užava River we find one of the most romantic lighthouses in Latvia – the Užava lighthouse, which is at the top of a steep dune. |

The Vilciņi farm is one of the largest and most modern agricultural manufacturing companies in Zemgale, always using environmentally friendly methods. The farm is in the Krimūni Parish in the heart of the historical region of Zemgale. It was established in 1991 by the parents of the current owner, Arnis Burmistrs. Today the farm specialises in grain farming on ~2,200 ha of land. The farm uses precise agricultural methods to save money and preserve the environment and human health. It is actively involved in EU-financed projects, has a modern set of agricultural equipment, and has installed a local meteorological facility. Tours are available. |

Cēsu centrālais laukums – Vienības laukums (20.gs.sākumā – Konventa laukums) – atgādina par Cēsu kauju notikumumiem, kuru nozīme un ikviena dalībnieka ieguldījums aprakstīti devīzē uz pieminekļa “No zobena saule lēca”. Cēsu kaujas 1019.gada jūnijā bija svarīgs Latvijas valstiskuma vēstures pagrieziena punkts, kad apvienotais latviešu un igauņu karaspēks sakāva vācu landesvēru, kas apdraudēja Baltijas valstu pastāvēšanu. Vienības laukums turpina būt par nozīmīgu notikumu liecinieku. 1989.gada 23.augustā daudzu cēsnieku ceļi veda uz Vienības laukumu, kuram cauri vijās Baltijas ceļš. |

This is on the north-western shore of Lake Lielezers of Limbaži, at the start of the Lielezers nature trail. The tower opens up a view of the lake and its lovely shores. It is worth walking the trail, which is several kilometres long, because it is an interesting one. This is part of the ZBR. |

The former air defence missile base took up a large territory to the South of Pāvilosta in its day, but today that land has been abandoned and degraded. It can be dangerous for visitors.

This route involves unique views that have never been seen before in Latvia! The impressively steep shoreline of the Baltic Sea begins a few kilometres to the North of Pāvilosta and ends shortly before Ošvalki, stretching for nearly 20 kilometres in all. Its most impressive and unusual forms are seen between Strante and Ulmale. The entire route leads down the western boundary of the former Iron Curtain, because the Baltic Sea coastline was militarised during the Soviet era and unavailable to most people. Remnants of former military objects and old tank routes in the dunes can still be seen. The largest biotopes of grey dunes stretch for several kilometres around Ventspils and Užava. These are unusual landscapes that can seldom be seen elsewhere in Europe. You can walk more than 10 kilometres here and not see another soul. Route information from Latvijas Lauku forums |
