The smoke sauna is an important part of everyday life in the Võru community in Estonia. It is the centre of a rich set of traditions including the actual bathing customs, the skills of making bathing whisks, building and repairing saunas, and smoking meat in the sauna. The sauna is a building or room heated by a stove covered with stones and with an elevated platform for sitting or lying. It has no chimney, and the smoke from the burning wood circulates in the room. People usually go into the sauna together and remain until they are sweating. Water is thrown on the heated stones to produce hot steam-laden air and bathers beat their bodies with whisks to remove dead skin and stimulate blood circulation. After sweating, whisking, relaxing and possible healing procedures, people cool themselves outside and rinse their bodies with water. The procedure is then repeated. The smoke sauna tradition is primarily a family custom, usually practised on Saturdays, but also before major festivals or family events. Its main function is to relax the body and mind. Families take turns hosting each other. Usually an older family member is responsible for preparing the sauna, accompanied by the children who gradually acquire the necessary skills. The smoke sauna tradition is part of the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Pinnu (Dievekļa) Sacrificial Stone is at Ulmale, some 300 m from the Liepāja-Ventspils highway (there are signs). This is a very beautiful and distinct bowl-type rock, and the indentation at the top is 15 cm deep and up to 61 cm in diameter. It is thought that this was an ancient cult location, particularly between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Rudzīši wineyard grows about 80 grape varieties. Pick your own blackcurrant berries at Bāniši berry farm. A beautiful landscape garden is open for visitors at Gundegas house.  200 year old oaks adorn the Vārkavas Park.  At Naujene museum of regional studies you will see an exposition showing the house of a wealthy Latvian farmer from the turn of 19th-20th centuries. Vasargelišķu viewing tower is 24m high and offers great views over the meandering Daugava River. Ethnographical Slutišķu village with carefully maintained wooden cabins exemplifies traditional Latgalian architecture. SIA N. Bomja bakery “Lielezers” is a sole proprietor enterprise of Normunds Bomis, founded in 1991 and located 3 km from Limbaži. The story of this bakery started more than 25 years ago, when craftsman Alberts Blumbergs’ knowledge and experience was put into practice and very delicious rye bread was made. In the bakery, traditional salinātā rye bread is made by hand, maturing scalded flour in aspen tubs for 24 hours and fermenting with sourdough. Salinātā rye bread is registered in the EU food quality scheme as a product with traditional speciality guaranteed. Bread baking is led by the experienced master bakers Lāsma Bome and Valters Kanopa. Offer tours in the bakery and tasting.
