The forest around Kaltene features a natural miracle – the rocks of Kaltene, which are also known as the barrier rocks. The rocks are 2-3 m from the sea and date back to the Ice Age. The Devil’s rock is the largest one. It used to be a beautiful pile of rocks that “stretched to the tops of the trees.” In older maps it is described as being 20 m high. It had many natural rocks, including some that were completely round, while others resembled plates. The rock was almost completely destroyed in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was chopped up to build roads. A fairly small part of the rock survives today, and it is 300 m long and 2 m high. Scientists believe that these rocks used to be sacred locations, because there are many legends and stories about them. The museum was established in 1998 and featured antiquities from the Iron Age and Bronze Age, as well as objects which speak to distinguished people from the region and Selonian culture. It is worth looking at the collection of ancient Selonian dishware. |

These are the ruins of World War II fortifications near what is now the Ķegums hydroelectric power plant. One blockhouse was found on the left bank of the Daugava River, approximately one kilometre to the South-Southeast from the plant’s dam. A second is also on the left bank of the river, opposite the Rēzijas campground. It has slid down the abraded shore of the reservoir and is partly underwater. It is mostly accessible by boat.

Here you will learn about home-based manufacturers, farms, companies and others in southern Vidzeme that produce various dairy products such as milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, ice cream, etc. From Rīga, take the Vidzeme Highway and turn toward Mālpils. On the way to Ērgļi and Jumurda, you’ll be delighted by the hillocks of the Vidzeme highlands and the lovely landscape that they represent. Near Ērgļi you will find Braki, the home of the classical Latvian author Rūdolfs Blaumanis, Meņģeļi, home of the Jurjāns brothers, and the Jumurda Estate. Drive on through Cesvaine, stopping to look at its impressive castle, and on to Madona, where you can have a delicious meal. From Madona, follow the lovely banks of the Daugava River to Koknese (Destiny Island, the Koknese castle, park and church), and on to Skrīveri, where the author Andrejs Upītis was born. There’s a homemade ice cream place and the factory that produces the universally known penuche candy that is sold under the “Gotiņa” brand name in Latvia. Then drive to Ogre for some Sierštelle cheeses and then back to Rīga. |

This partly forested hillock stands 40 metres above the surrounding area and offers impressive views. The fact that this was once a castle hill is attested by the presence of a moat and remnants of defensive fortifications. It is thought that Lettigalian tribes settled here in the 10th century AD. You can climb the hillock to take a look at the surrounding landscapes. |
