The word zivis means fish, and the name of the street is derived from a fish market that once existed at the end of the street near Kurši Square. There are old log warehouses in the yard of Zivju Street 4/6 and the yard of Peldu Street 2. One of the most popular destinations for tourists is the Latvian alley of fame for musicians (since 2006), with bronze replications of the palms of hands of 35 Latvian musicians. The ruins of the Koknese Castle are found where the Daugava and Pērse rivers flow together. The castle, which is on a floodplain, was built for the bishopric of Rīga in 1209, and it replaced an ancient Latvian castle that was made of wood. The castle was blown up by Saxon forces in 1701. A visitors centre is near the ruins, and there you can carve a Medieval coin or rent a boat to sail down the Daugava. Make sure to stroll through the Koknese park, which is alongside the ruins. |

The trip starts in Kuldīga – a jewel among the old towns in Kurzeme. The town centre is home to historic buildings dating back to the 17th – 19th century. Cobbled streets of Kuldīga, old buildings, the river Alekšupīte, running through the town, St. Catherine’s Church and organ music concerts in it, gourmet restaurants and a country delicatessen shop in the town centre is a great travel experience to enjoy in a leisurely ambience of a small town. The red-brick bridge over the river Venta is a landmark of the town. The widest waterfall of Europe, Ventas rumba (width ~100 m) lies on the Venta. Venta river promenade is a popular place for walking along the riverbank. A private transfer will take you from Kuldīga to the village of Snēpele, where you will start your hike. The trail will take you to the Pelči Manor, the manor park and the deer park next to the guest house “Mazsālijas”. Next, the Forest Trail will lead you through the Abava River Valley Nature Park up to the town of Sabile. The latter is home to a winery and cider house “Sabiles Sidra nams”, which offers tastings and sells the local wine and cider. The section along the Abava River Valley Nature Park is the most diverse in terms of landscape and terrain of a river valley in Kurzeme. The river valley with its numerous habitats and vast biodiversity reaches a depth of 30–40 m and is more than 300 m wide. One will find springs, waterfalls, rock outcrops, and boulders here. After the Forest Trail has meandered through meadows, oak forests and hillocks it finally reaches the town of Kandava. |

This estate is an unexpected surprise in this place and date. Work on the castle began in themed-18th century, and it was rebuilt one century later. During the first half of the 20th century the castle hosted an elementary school, and during the Soviet occupation it was an apartment building. Today the castle has been reborn in terms of form and content in the direct and indirect sense. The Mountain Holiness Community works here. During the summer, there are children's camps and other events. The old stairs, window shutters and brass door hinges are all original. A church is being built on the site. The Renaissance-style garden can be visited. Contact the estate in advance for a tour of the interior of the castle an church in the company of local residents who will tell you all about the history of the estate and its garden. 300 m to the south-west of the estate is the Brukna Castle Hill, which is hard to see in situ and even harder to access. |
