Stupeļu Hill is 3 km to the South of the Vecumnieki-Ilūkste road. There are no signs, so the castle hill might be difficult to find. The Great Stupeļu Rock, which is discussed further on in this guidebook, is also hard to find when there is vegetation. Stupeļu Hill is approximately 30 m high, and it was one of the highest castle hills in the historical district of Selonia. Archaeologists say that it was first abandoned at the beginning of our era and then populated again during the late Iron Age. It is interesting that iron was extracted and processed near the castle hill. Archaeologists believe that this is the site of one of the earliest “cities” in the region. To the West of the hill is the Great Stupeļu Rock, which is 6.7 m long, 5.6 m wide and up to 2.7 m high. Above ground, it is 35 m3 large, and it may have been a cult location. During archaeological digs in the late 1970s, antiquities from the 10th to the 13th century were found here. |

Rendā uz nelielās Abavas kreisā krasta pietekas Īvandes 200 m attālumā viens no otra izveidojušies divi ūdenskritumi jeb rumbas. Lielākais ir apmēram 2m, mazākais aptuveni 1,4 m augsts. Upītes krastos redzami nelieli dolomītu atsegumi.

This farm rears goats and produces various goat’s milk dairy products, making goat’s cheese and other products from fresh ingredients. The farm also grows potatoes, juicy strawberries and other products. The summer outhouse provides space for 15 to 20 people to sit cosily by the table and chat. A light meal made from 100% farm products is offered. |

Established: 1890. The Wagner Garden is located near Lake Jumprava. Its originator was Friedrich Wagner, who grew fruit trees, decorative shrubs and flowers. This garden contains one of Latvia’s oldest and best collections of foreign trees and shrubs. There are trails for perambulations in the park.

Pühtittsa Convent at Kuremäe was established in 1891 and is the only operating Russian Orthodox nunnery in Estonia. Centuries ago there was a sacred grove on Kuremäe hill and a sacrificial spring at its foot, the spring is considered “holy“ for its curative powers. The convent compound is open to visitors; guided tours run by nuns can be booked to learn more about the daily life of convent residents. |

The aerial tram across the Gauja is the only vehicle of its type in the Baltic States. It was installed in 1969 with the help of engineers from Georgia. The crossing is 1060 m long, and the cable which crosses the river is just one cable without any supports. The tram rides about 40 metres above the river, and it offers an outstanding look at the local landscapes. During the evening, the tram is used by Bungee jumpers. |

This venue is a lovely and calm place by a pond that will delight all fishermen with a massive number of fish. Guests will sleep in a granary that is 120 years old and has bedrooms, a kitchen and a sauna. |

Kīdevas muiža rakstos ir minēta 1614. g., taču pašreiz redzamā divstāvu kungu māja, ir celta 19. gs. beigās. Ēkas sienas ir klātas ar koka šķindeļiem, kas viens otru pārklāj kā zivs zvīņas. Šāds kungu mājas sienu pārklājums Igaunijas mērogā ir unikāls. Laikā no 1919. – 1951. g. tajā atradās skola. Blakus muižai atrodas neliels parks. Diemžēl turpat pusgadsimtu ilgās pamestības rezultātā ēkas atrodas ļoti kritiskā stāvoklī. Tas ir arī pietiekams apmeklējuma iemesls. |

The Miķeļbāka lighthouse was built in 1957 and is the highest one in Latvia. Standing 58 m tall, it can only be viewed from the outside. |

Kaltene features several homes where shipbuilders used to live – Caurnāši, which was home to the Bertliņi family, Ilmati, where six ailing ships were built, Maizītes, where the Stahl family of ship builders built 16 two-mast and three-mast ships, and Dambekalni, which was once one of the first canned fish factories on the coastline. To the side of the sea are the old boat piers of Kaltene. In 1936, a board pier was built by the Freijs family from Roja. It was 200 m long and had room for some 50 boats. All that is left are wooden poles that have been eaten away by the sea and time. The memorial site with a 1936 monument produced by the sculptor Kārlis Zāle is located in Smārde near the Smārde-Tukums road. It commemorates 38 soldiers who fell during World War I. Between 1915 and 1917, the front line was near Smārde. Many men were killed, and they were buried at the local swamp. It was only after the war that they were reburied in Smārde, Kūdra, Ķemeri, and Sloka. |
