The Western breakwater was finished in 1885 and stretches 860 metres into the sea. Together with the Eastern breakwater it regulates the flow of water from the Daugava River into the sea, also reducing silt levels in the river. The structure of the breakwater is based on piles that are strengthened with rocks. The breakwater has been reconstructed and strengthened several times. During the 19th century, it held a prison for offenders. Approximately ½ of the breakwater has been restored with cement, but the rest of it is in fairly sad shape. Polish King Stefan Báthory ordered the construction of a lighthouse alongside the Daugava in 1528, and the first map to show a lighthouse was produced in 1536. A 1721 list of lighthouses in the Russian Empire notes a pile of rocks at the location upon which a fire was lit. Later there were wooden and stone towers that were destroyed during wars. The current Daugavgrīva lighthouse was built in 1957 and is 35 m high. Its light can be seen at a distance of 18 nautical miles. |

To start the tour you take a train from Riga to Liepaja, a city with white sandy beaches and a lively cafe culture. The route goes through suburbs of Liepaja to the former millitary town where you see the Orthodox cathederal, old naval fortifications, former barracks and an imposing military prison which is now a tourism site. Pavilosta is a small seaside town and a favourite with windsurfers. Next the route follows the picturesque coastline, including steep banks at Jurkalne and finishes at the well-maintained town of Ventspils. Then along to fishing villages that are home to the tiny Finno-Ugric ethnic group, the Livs. At Cape Kolka the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga. Here, sampling the local smoked fish is a must. Further on, the route crosses three different types of sea shore – the stony beach at Kaltene, a sandy one at Upesgriva and coastal meadows at Engure. Finish with the trails at Kemeri National Park and return to Riga from the popular resort town of Jūrmala. |

The first mention of Pēterupe Rectory goes back to the late 17th century. The Manor Park and the buildings have partially survived to the present day, including a linden alley at the end of Smilšu Street, planted by the pastor Jānis Neilands in 1879 and the grand oak planted by Johann Wilhelm Knierim in 1869. After the fire of 1908, the Rectory was restored and partially rebuilt. In Soviet times, the property was removed from the parish and the house was named “Līgotnes”. During German times the Rectory was occupied by legionnaires. After the war, the building of the Rectory was turned into a hospital, then into a secondary school and later it was transformed into a block of flats for teachers. Now the building again belongs to the parish and it is inhabited by a priest of the parish and his family. |
