Work on the Valmiera Castle began in 1283.  The castle was burned down in 1702 during the Great Northern War, and the city’s walls were torn down in the late 17th century.  Ruins of the castle and remnants of other Medieval fortifications have been preserved.

The museum is dedicated to the writer Ernests Birznieks-Upītis (1871–1960), whose nickname as a child used to be Pastariņš. The historic buildings have been restored according to the situation in the mid-20th century. Rye bread, Sun bread, and Shepherd's bread are baked in the museum’s farm. Each spring visitors can take part in building wattle and other types of fences, to bake bread and rolls and to taste the results. In December – baking sklandrauši (a carrot-based pastry). There are weaving demonstrations, butter churning demonstrations and opportunities to try one’s hand at other old-time farm work.

The Limbažu Cheese factory has more than 90 years of experience with dairy processing.  It only uses milk from local farmers in Vidzeme, while the dairy processing technologies have been brought in from Switzerland.  Limbažu Cheese exports 95% of its output.  Alongside the company and on the other side of the street from the ruins of the Limbaži castle is a little store where the company’s products can be bought.

was first mentioned in written form in 1582.  A census in 1736 found two farms, Lekši and Žonaki.  A census in 1935 found that there were 106 people in Vaide, including 40 Livonians, 60 Latvians and a few Estonians and Germans.  In 1939, there were 21 homesteads in the village.  Nika Polmanis (1823-1903) was born at the Lāži homestead.  He was the first educated Livonian and lived in the region for all his life.  Livonian poet Alfons Bertholds (1910-1993) wrote a poem about a noble oak tree that grows alongside the homestead.  The vast Berthold family is linked to Žonaki -- Livonian storyteller Marija Šaltjāre, yacht captain Andrejs Bertholds (USA), his son, library scholar Artūrs Benedikts Bertholds (USA), Livonian poet Alfons Bertholds, Livonian language specialists Paulīne Kļaviņa and Viktors Bertholds, Swiss doctor Marsels Bertholds, globally renowned pianist Arturs Ozoliņš (Canada), and Livonian language storyteller and poet Grizelda Kristiņa (1910-2013), who was the last native speaker of Livonian.  The Ozolnieki homestead is also linked to the Bertholds family.  Paulīne Kļaviņa (1918-2001), a specialist in the fields of Livonian traditions and language, and her mother, Livonian storyteller Katrīna Zēberga, both lived there.  Paulīne collected ethnographic objects that can be seen at the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum in the granary of the Livonian Dēliņi farm.  The Purvziedi homestead in Vaide is owned by forest ranger Edgars Hausmanis, who has a collection of forest animal horns and antlers.

Guest house "Ausmas" is located in Valka region, and can accommodate up to 30 people. Catering services are also available both on site and off-site. Guests have access to a wet sauna, as well as a sauna ritual with a skilled bather. The guest house organizes various events, as well as tours and groups of children. There is also an animal farm on the farm, where children can feed and love a variety of animals. The owners actively cooperate with the neighboring farms.

Located at the Rūjiena High School, this Kārlis Zemdega sculpture was installed in 1936 in honour of a local teacher, Jūlija Skuiņa, who drowned in 1936 at the age of 24.  There are various legends about her death, one of which talks about a tragic love story involving the Rev Roberts Slokenbergs.

The company is in a building that was built in 1911 and produces milk, kefir, buttermilk, cream, cottage cheese, sweet cottage cheese crèmes, butter, yogurt and cheese.  A store alongside the co-operative offers Straupe Dairy Co-operative products, as well as cheeses manufactured by its partners – Smiltenes Dairy and SIA Latvijas Piens.  This is one of five companies in Latvia that is allowed to manufacture one of the EU’s guaranteed traditional characteristics product, “Summer Solstice” cheese.  The products have been awarded the “Green Teaspoon” and “Latvian Goodies” status.  Group tours are offered a chance to taste the products and learn about the co-operative’s operations.
