Back when the Baltic Sea was part of the ancient Littorina Sea, the coastline emerged as a small and shallow shore that was formed 4,500 to 5,000 years ago. The coastline has little rocks and gravel that have preserved typical examples of fauna from the Littorina Sea. The ancient cliff is best seen at the Dobeļi homestead in Kaltene. This is one of a few parts of the shore of the Bay of Rīga where there was an abrasion coastline during the era of the Littorina Sea. The shallow bay is popular among birds which feed and rest here during migrations. (Source: Roja TIC) |

Tiesa, to vērtību apzināsies tikai vides speciālisti. No Jašas ezera var uzsākt laivu braucienu pa vienu no Latgales ezeru "kēdēm". Ezera austrumu krastā atrodas Geļenovas parks.

The excessively damp forests at this place include the Vēršupīte River bog, and this is one of the most diverse biotopes in Latvia in terms of the number of species that can be found here. The fact that the area is regularly flooded is shown by the fat roots of black alders – indeed, the place looks like a stand of mangroves. The wooden pathway that is the Dumbrāju trail starts at the Forest House for those who wish to examine the bog. The most impressive views are seen during spring floods or rainy seasons at other times of the year. The little river breaks out of its bed and floods a large territory. The Lake Sloka hiking trail is another place where you can study the Vēršupīte bog. The circular trail is 3 km long, and its beginning is at the Lake Sloka bird watching tower. |

The Rožlejas farm is in the Džūkste Parish of the Tukums Administrative District, where the Eastern Courlandian highlands interact with the Heath lowlands. The parents of the current owner, Jānis Ukše, began work there in 1989, establishing a natural farm to grow sugar beets and then also wheat. Thanks to thoughtful farming, Rožlejas has, over the past quarter-century, turned into one of the largest grain farms in Western Latvia. The owners have taken active part in EU projects to purchase modern equipment and to build hangars for the storage of grain and equipment. The farm specialises in winter barley and winter wheat, using ~1,200 ha of land for that purpose. |

The trail climbs up and down along the bluffs of lower River Pilsupe and reveals a fascinating sight of three white dune exposures (the largest is called the White Dune). The trail is 900m long, and the White Dune is ca 20m high. It has formed ca 6000 years ago, in the period of the Littorina Sea which is a foregoer of the Baltic Sea. Here the first Stone Age settlement on the North Western coast of Latvia has been found in 1934 by geologist S. Burhards. In the sand, some 500m from the sea, he found some pottery fragments, a sandstone hone, a piece of flint, parts of bones and an amber bead. He handed the findings over to the National Museum of History. In October 1934, the site was checked by archaeologist E. Šturms, who found the archaeological layer, typical for such settlements, in the landslides of the Pilsupe riverbanks. In 1936 he started larger excavations to continue by 1938. Totally seven, chronologically different settlements were detected and many artefacts found, including fragments of the so called Sārnate and pit-comb pottery, as well as some pieces of corded pottery. Based on these findings, the settlement is dated back to the beginning or middle of the 3rd millenary B.C., and it has been inhabited till the beginning of the 2nd millenary B.C. Especially remarkable are three clay figures in human shape which have probably been used for some religious cult purposes. Since 1993, archaeologist Ilzes Loze has discovered several pit-comb ware culture settlements in large area around Pūrciems village. They are known in research literature as „the Ģipka settlements”. |

Kuldiga is deservedly considered the most beautiful small town of medieval times in Latvia. Instead of it already in the 13th century the Bandava centre of the ancient Cours land was located. In 1242 construction of stone castle was begun at Venta Falls by the Livonian Order. Populated area formed beside the castle, which was the first to acquire the rights of a city in Kurzeme (in 1378). Significant was also its participation in the Hanza Union. From 1561 until 1795 Kuldīga was the capital city of Kurzeme Dukedom. Naturally, in the first half of the 17th century it experienced rapid economic growth, which was terminated by the beginning of the Northern War and plague epidemic. The pride of Kurzeme residents and the lack of larger industrial objects was the reason, why during the Soviet times larger masses of immigrants did not flood the city, therefore today Kuldiga is one of the most Latvian cities in Kurzeme. It is worth to visit Kuldiga and stay there for more than one day, because there is plenty to do here. Nature fans may observe the flying fish, but for researchers of cultural history a really vast field of work opens here. |
