Ilze Kupča bakes cakes in Mārupe, preserving her grandmother’s traditions. She has received several awards in various competitions in Latvia. She makes cakes and zephirs from natural products, which are either purchased from Latvian farmers or home producers, grown by herself, or even picked in the forests. Individual orders are accepted. Rye delicacies: blackcurrant and apple zephirs with rye breadcrumbs, lingonberry and caramel cake with rye bread.

This wooden pathway will introduce the visitor to a high-type swamp and a unique habitat – a place where sulphur streams flow into the Raganu swamp. The little lakes in the swamp are unique – they are the result of sulphur bacteria, and there is a special range of species in those lakes. The landscape is interesting, and the smell of sulphur pervades, mostly from sulphur ponds. The trail is 800m long and will require 20 minutes to an hour to traverse. The object is on the border of the Zemgale and Vidzeme regions.

The family enterprise (formed in 2006) makes home-made ice-cream from fruit and berries. They make both classical – such as plombieres, cream, joghurt ice-creams and sorbets and nowadays cuisine’s „miracle”- sprat, blue cheese, horse-radish and potato ice-cream with tomato sauce. Till now 80 different ice-cream recipes have been tried. If you book a visit beforehand, you can have an excursion and learn everything about the process of making ice-cream from the chefs themselves. In the cafe it is possible to try different ice-cream dishes – each one with a different ice-cream sauce. The cafe also welcomes pets!

The barrow which offers a good view is at the northern end of the Dunduri meadows – at the end of Melnragi. It is an artificial barrow which follows along with the bed of the little Slampe River. The meadows are home to livestock allowed to live in the wild, and you can see a bit of the restored Slampe. The view is particularly interesting during flooding season, when the surrounding wetlands become saturated. This is a location for bird-watching.

Take a train from Riga to Cēsis and stay in the very heart of this chaming town.
