The Kaltene Lutheran Church dates back to 1567, when Duke Gotthard Kettler of Courland ordered the construction of new churches in Kurzeme. One of them was in Kaltene, and was known as the Church of St Catherine. In 1848, a clay church was built in place of the old wooden church. A sacristy was added in 1880, and the church was rebuilt and expanded in 1896. It suffered much damage during World War I because a Russian mine ship attacked it. The church was restored during the first half of the 1920s. The altar painting, “Christ and St Peter on the Sea” was painted in 1898 by M Pohl after a panting by R. Richter. The pulpit and organ date back to the 18th century and are cultural monuments of national importance. The organ was built by August Martin in 1843, and it was initially in a church in Gulbene. The instrument was brought to Kaltene in 1943 and is the oldest surviving instrument by Martin. The bell was manufactured in 2006 by the Liepājas Metalurgs company, and a new building for the congregation was built in 2012 and 2013. The first scenes of the feature film “Long Road to the Dunes” and the film “Forest of Bulrush” were filmed outside the gates of the church. Nearby is the Putniņi homestead. The saloon is at the edge of the Murjāņi-Limbaži road (P9) and alongside the Igate Castle. It is built on the foundations of a former windmill, and the wheel of the mill has been preserved. The old watermill is still hard at work and is used to mill grain for traditional porridge and buns. The saloon works with local farmers. Latvian cuisine: Mushroom soup, barley porridge with meat, barley buns, grit sausage with lingonberry sauce, crepes with jam, potato pancakes, fried plaice or pike, stacked rye bread. Special foods: Sautéed rabbit, stuffed filet of turkey. |

The construction of the state began in the early 20th century. The mansion was built of bricks and fieldstones between 1905 and 1911 in the styles of Historicism and Art Nouveau. The estate was owned by engineer and professor Stanislav Kerbedz from St Petersburg, the first Russian engineer to develop principles for the architectonic aspects of bridges. These were used during the latter half of the 19th century, and Kerbedz led the construction of the Nikolayev bridge across the Neva River in St Petersburg. Kerbedz’s wife, Yevgenia, was well known as a lover of art, and she brought various art objects to the estate from Italy. The Lūznava Estate was a popular place for gatherings of artists during the summers. Among those to visit was the distinguished Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus Čiurlionis. The estate is surrounded by a 23.7 ha landscape park with a system of ponds. Near the estate is a statue of the Madonna, which was carved by an unknown Italian artist. The statue was damaged and thrown into a pond during World War II, but it was restored in 1991. Reconstruction of the main building of the estate was complete in 2015, and today it is a modern and international centre for environmental education and the arts. |

The national park was established to protect the 100 or so small islands that make up the archipelago of the local area. The largest island, the Vilsandi Island, is 6 km long and up to 2 km wide. You can rent a boat to get there, or, during appropriate conditions, you can walk across the sea and the small islands from the southern end of the Kuusnõmme peninsula.

In the house that was renovated due to the initiative of the Craftsmen society of Beverina, it is possible to buy the products of both the district craftsmen and those from further territories, to visit creative workshops and events in order to learn the techniques of differnt handicrafts. The house is both a teaching centre and a marketplace, as well as the centre to popularise the cultural, folk and Latvian lifestyle of the Beverina district. |

The Baltic Coastal Hiking Route goes through Nõva Nature reserve where you will have exceptional views of the white and grey dunes. The beaches are popular for fishing and kite-surfing. In Dirhami you can spend some time in a cafe and from its terrace you will have a beautiful view of the sea and the port. Along the way you can also see ancient Swedish hamlets with a different cultural environment and landscape, as well as shallow lakes that have been separated from the sea. |

The largest NATURA 2000 territory in Latvia covers 6% of the country’s area. It is located in parts of the Limbaži, Valmiera and Valka districts, and it is a place of an enormously diverse range of landscapes, biotopes and species. The Salaca River is one of the most important rivers in the entire Baltic Sea region in terms of spawning grounds for salmon. The river valley and its sandstone cliffs attract many visitors. It is no accident that this is the second most popular river in Vidzeme for water tourism. The shore of the Bay of Rīga, which is not very long, also features a great diversity in landscapes and biotopes. At the northern end, we find the Randu meadows. In the central part there are sandy beaches, but at the southern end – 22 kilometres of rocky shoreline. The so-called Northern swamps are found on the border with Estonia, while the Seda heath is one of the most important places in the region for birds to rest and feed during migration. The reserve also features a diverse forest in which one can find all of the types of forest which are common in Latvia. Nature trails and viewing towers or platforms are found in the Randu meadows, on the banks of Lake Burtnieks, along the Planči and Niedrāji-Pilka swamps, on the banks of Lake Dziļezers and Lake Lielezers, and elsewhere. The Skaņākalns park in Mazsalaca is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Northern Vidzeme. The territory boasts many important cultural monuments, including one of the earliest known settlements in Latvia – a fishing settlement and burial ground which date back to the 5th to the 2nd millennium BC.

This farm offers tours for children who can become friends of horses, look at Angus cattle and learn about a dairy farm. The children are transported in a specially adapted cart that is pulled by a tractor. The farm plans to purchase some alpacas in 2018. |

72 types of wild rhododendrons with 193 different species
This is the only specialised rhododendron nursery in the Baltic States. Specialists there work on different kinds of rhododendrons, seeking to produce decorative and winter-resistant types of the flower. The nursery also sells plants. In the facility’s pine forest, which covers 11.8 hectares, you can see a large collection of rhododendrons from all over the world.
There are 64 winter-resistant types of rhododendrons at “Babīte,” including “Alma Mater,” “Academia Scientiarum,” “Emeritus,” “Eduards Smiļģis,” “Dita Krenberga,” and others (these were developed by Rihards Kondratovičs). All of these are appropriate for Northern Europe.

3 km to the south of the centre of Jūrkalne, near the old (gravelled) road between Liepāja and Jūrkalne, is the place where the three-year Feliksberga Maritime School existed between 1871 and 1902. The building is long gone, and the memorial has involves an oaken boat with two wooden poles on which old ownership signs have been engraved. |
