The surface of the rock once contained
text about the destruction of local Livs by Swedish King Charles IX and by the Black
Plague (the rock is on a spot where victims of the plague were buried, and the text
has been erased over the course of time). The smallest rock on the top, which also
used to have an inscription, has been brought here from the Pakalni homestead.

The Zasa park is an estate park that is on the shores of the little Zasa River near the Zasa millpond (toward the North of Zasa). The landscape park dates back to the 18th century and is in the style of Romanticism. The park was installed when the mansion of the Zasa Estate was built. It was owned by Heinrich von Zass, after whom the Zasulauks neighbourhood of Rīga is named. When ownership of the estate changed in the 19th century, the Zasa Estate was seen as one of the wealthiest and most beautiful estates in the region. It is worth hiking through the vast park with its many bridges, the Werewolf tree, the Devil’s rock and a sacred stream. This was an island after the Rīga hydroelectric power plant created a reservoir, and before that it was a peninsula on the Left Bank of the Daugava. During World War I, there were massive battles between Latvian Riflemen and a much larger German army on Death Island. On December 25, 1916, the Germans used poisonous gas against the Latvian troops. In honour of this, the architect Eižens Laube designed a monument to fallen Latvian riflemen on the northern shore of Death Island. It was unveiled in 1924. Death Island can be reached by boat, and the trenches and graves there are of interest. There is a pier for boats on the north-western shore of the island, and nearby is a location for leisure. Some of the trenches and dugouts have recently been restored. The battles were described by Aleksandrs Grīns in his masterpiece, “Snowstorm of Souls.” |

In addition to the Northern Forts, coastal batteries and Karosta district of Liepāja that are all mentioned in this database, there are other impressive elements of the former fortifications system – Lunete (the southern part of Lake Tosmare), the Central Fort (between Grīzupes Street and 14 November Boulevard), the Eastern Fort (to the South of Brīvības Street and the North of Lake Liepāja), the Southern Fort (at the Pērkone canal), and the Old Forts at the Olimpija stadium. All of these locations are freely accessible, but be careful if you go inside the former forts – they were blown up at one time and may remain dangerous.
